well done lads, it's 2026 & you've managed to allow the fucking Sun to position itself as slightly less hostile to people who support LGBT+ rights than The Big Supposedly Gay Dancing Show

I mean, come on lads. The only way I’m going to believe the Russians are to blame for the hard far right turn in British politics and media is if it turns out they secretly infiltrated and took over Oxford University some time around 1971.

It’s just not lost on me that whenever I hear that (x) is actually Russian propaganda, it’s usually little different in tone or content than the kind of thing you’d find on the front page of The Sun.

That would certainly be both nice and helpfully convenient, but I note that if you want to hear theories about e.g. your Bolshevik leaders conspiring with ethnic villains against white Britons, you can get that off the news stands pretty much any day of the year. You can hear it on Radio 4.
Ukraine blows up Russian data centres and immediately and mysteriously online talk about Germany's Far Right AfD virtually disappears.

I don’t doubt it mate but if a person wanted to hear about how e.g. Britain is ruled by Bolsheviks conspiring against white people with ethnic villains, then they can get that off the news stand any day of the week. They can get it off Radio 4.

It’s not so much what they were threatening him over - I’m sure that is what it was - as the fact they bothered to make the threat at all, rather than just doing as they pleased. That’s what they’d do to someone who isn’t one of the lads. And then, not doing it.

“Sadly, Reform have had to become racist, out expediency” guys you can just not bother trying to make it all sound credible: just say the wacky things you want to say and then brazen them out. You look like idiots trying to make it all make sense.

Some Reform supporters complaining about me equating Green's and Reform's toxicity this morning. The Green's Zionism motion is racist. Reform's embrace of Ethno-Nationalism and the Nigeria Strategy is racist.
That's it. There's not really any argument.

I remember that time the Telegraph did an article instructing Gove to come clean about something, or else the paper would reveal it to the world. And then, nothing. I imagine it was some kind of crude blackmail over a personal matter that isn’t the paper’s business, but who knows?

It is very interesting that the Mail’s story on Michael Gove’s recent ex-girlfriend being charged with CSAM offences has been memoryholed two days after it was published. Public records show she appeared at Oxford Combined Court centre on September 30 and pleaded not guilty.

TL:DR - Britain loudly clowned itself because our politicians and media outlets are absolutely disastrous, and primarily focused on maintaining their own clout at everybody’s expense. If fooling ourselves that it’s Russia’s fault makes it easier to mitigate the damage then fine, fuck it, why not.
1545
flyingrodent @flyingrodent.bsky.social · 5h
It all seems especially silly, given we ended up leaving the EU in the way that we did because almost the entire British political/media class unified to either Get Brexit Done with Boris, or to scream at the public not to vote for the terrorist Hitler opposition party.

Fine, if casting it as enemy action makes it easier to sell to people as an obviously fucking stupid thing to have done. But I do not see how Russian interference could amount to as much as a tiny fraction of the blame that should be laid on the Conservative Party, the Sun, the Mail and others.

At least in 2016-19 it felt somewhat organic, even as it was almost entirely Morgan McSweeney and pals feeding drivel and bullshit to the press and mobbing together with a gaggle of deeply unpleasant right wing cranks. This time, the press are fully radicalised to screaming rage immediately.

Not for the first time, I’d ask: what does it mean, if the press keep running campaigns claiming that country’s most horrific racists and bigots are the Green Party, the Labour left, Amnesty International, Stonewall, the police (I know) and Gary Lineker? Look around you. Does that feel right?
CAMILLA LONG
Jew-baiting Greens haven't peaked: they're just getting startedIt's strange having a fully fledged, fully funded racist party in our political line-up. It does not comfort me that in Holborn & St Pancras the Greens "only" got nearly 9,000 votes. If the British National Party, another party defined by a racist lie, had won that many votes in any constituency, there would be pandemonium. There would be riots. There wouldn't be amused, jocular analyses in all the main papers. Its leader wouldn't be ushered on to the Today programme as a senior statesman for a light dressing-down by Nick Robinson.
He wouldn't be allowed to repeat propaganda as Polanski did (he sounded as if he was reading lines from a piece of paper). He wouldn't be greeted with a comical, indulgent shrug.
And if I were a Jew in Holborn, or anywhere, watching this, what would I now be thinking? I would be thinking: I now know precisely how many of my fellow constituents want to kill me. Is anyone doing anything to protect me from them?
Just look at the recent hate crime statistics. Jews are now almost ten times more likely than Muslims to be the targets of a religious hate crime. So no one is stopping it. No one is even touching it. This is an unacceptable place for politics to have reached.

I just expected the cops would take exception to e.g. Labour, the Tories and a pack of far right crackpots monstering a senior officer out of his job by screaming about him secretly conspiring with “Islamists”. Apparently not.

Seeing the aggressively two tier approach by our police has pushed me from a position of near total support for our police- as far back as I can remember- to near total lack of confidence today.
It is almost farcical how politicised the police have become, to the extent that they are visibly on the side of some of the worst elements of society.
The next government will obviously need to demonstrate how it will get on top of crime and bring peace back to our streets. But it will also need to radically and completely reform the institution of policing itself.

In 2017 I interviewed a soldier who took part in the SAS night raids in Afghanistan. In 2024| gave evidence to the public inquiry into allegations of Extra Judicial Killings. While I believe those EJKs took place it is essential to understand the strategic context. My book Blades asks the fundamental question 'what would you have done?' Because at the time UK govt support for Counter Terrorism operations was non-existent. The human rights of the Taliban were prioritised over the lives of British soldiers. SAS soldiers faced an impossible dilemma. The bombmakers and facilitators operated outside UK ROE and were recycled back onto the battlefield within 96hrs of capture. Yet the IED networks represented the enemy's most potent threat. Many hundreds of British soldiers and Afghan civilians were being blown up. I am proud that my newspaper the Mail has had the courage to set out these arguments. This is bold journalism. The SAS are not a rogue unit and its soldiers acted rationally and professionally in impossible
