I recently read a good book! It's not much on paper but it was a big win because I've been having trouble reading and concentrating. The book in question was "Replaceable You" by Mary Roach. She's my favorite author.

God says to a man "you have died. Prepare for judgement. You will now confront your best self. The version of you that lived up to all your potential." An exact duplicate of the man pops into existence and says "hi, it's me! Your best self! I'm exactly like you!" He continues "turns out youa ctually did live up to all of your potential!" The original man puts his hands on his head and says "Jesus, that's depressing."

Ballpoint pen, colored pencil, and copic gray marker on paper. A man sits at the table with a painting easel, painting supplies, and a small bowl of fruit. As he paints on the canvas he speaks to someone on his landline phone, “Had a dream that a witch told me to start painting - - yeah, doin’ a little fruit bowl thing.” Artist’s note: I probably should’ve painted the colors in this one rather than used colored pencil. Whatever the witch represents in his psyche he is wise to listen to her.

This is also what my therapist and my DBT skills coach tell me so I know it to be true. But knowing a thing is true is super fucking easy, believing it in your heart or pushing it through a brain made of self-loathing is really goddamn hard. Just gotta keep forcing that info into yourself, I guess.

Yes! Any time I think of my mom's music I immediately go to Edge of Seventeen by Stevie Nicks. My mom is a former singer for a cover and originals band, and I can distinctly recall her practicing that one when I was little. She also did this one.

I'm glad someone else was able to find joy in it, or at least I hope they did. I wasn't trying to imply you were young at the time, just that I was and it may have colored my opinion. Sorry if I caused any offense.

I didn't enjoy Moby Dick when I read it as a youngster. I respected it, but probably wouldn't decide to read it again. Then in college I was introduced to Melville's other work. I still recommend Bartleby the Scrivener to pretty much everyone who asks my recs.

"The works of the roots of the vines, of the trees, must be destroyed to keep up the price, and this is the saddest. bitterest thing of all. Carloads of oranges dumped on the ground. The people came for miles to take the fruit. but this could not be. How would thev buy oranges at twenty cents a dozen if they could drive out and pick them up? And men with hoses squirt kerosene on the oranges, and they are angry at the crime, angry at the people who have come to take the fruit. A million people hungry, needing the fruit- and kerosene sprayed over the golden mountains. And the smell of rot fills the country. Burn coffee for fuel in the ships. Burn corn to keep warm, it makes a hot fire. Dump potatoes in the rivers and place guards along the banks to keep the hungry people fron fishing them out. Slaughter the pigs and bury them, and let the putrescence drip down into the earth.
There is a crime here that goes bevond denunciation. There is a sorrow here that weeping cannot symbolize. There is a failure here that topples all our success. The ertile earth, the straight tree rows, the sturdv trunks, and the ripe fruit. And childrer dying of pellagra must die because a profit cannot be taken from an orange. And coroners must fill in the certificate- died of malnutrition- because the food must rot must be forced to rot. The people come with nets to fish for potatoes in the river, and he guards hold them back; they come in rattling cars to get the dumped oranges, bu the kerosene is sprayed. And they stand still and watch the potatoes float bv, listen to the screaming pigs being killed in a ditch and covered with quick-lime, watch the mountains of oranges slop down to a putrefying ooze; and in the eyes of the people here is the failure; and in the eyes of the hungry there is a growing wrath. In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage."

I live near enough to my town's (general) hospital to hear the medevac choppers frequently and my take is: they're pretty quiet! What the fuck is wrong with these absolute shitheels? "Oh no, every now and then there's a mild noise!" I wonder if they'd like slap-induced tinnitus?

My great-grandmother had animal control called on her multiple times for this exact situation. She lived in the middle of town, and the neighbors had to have hated her. I was too little back then to really grasp the situation beyond "yay, kitties!"

I would like to articulate one of the BIGGEST misconceptions about cat breed genetics by talking about the NEBELUNG! An extremely rare breed with only SIX(6) in the whole US, and no breeders, yet one that thousands of folk online are convinced they own. Your cat is NOT any breed, and that's okay.
A TICA registered Nebelung cat. They are extremely rare and very close to extinction. The breed was never popular, but since it's the only pure bred long coated gray cat, most folk assume all long coated gray cats are nebelungs.Several Facebook nebelung cat groups ranging from 6-15 THOUSAND members. It also has a post by a moderator actively dismissing any scientific post calling out that the cats are NOT Nebelungs.
