“Do take care that if the majority of your dancers are young people that your music is modern, catchy and has some zipp to it. Don’t treat modern youth to the style that is more appropriate to elders of the Edwardian age.”

What’s more: I don’t quite want to say that you NEVER get to do those things after you graduate, but you will never again inhabit a space where it is ENCOURAGED like that, and eventually you will come to miss that part of undergrad life even more than you miss being able to get drunk on a Thursday.

The most Robert Eggers version of Romeo and Juliet imaginable would be a theatrical proshot staged in an exacting replica of the Globe theater using authentic Elizabethan techniques (Brooklyn accents, unruly groundlings, twink Juliet)

If mandate just meant “they won the election” in this context, what would be the point of talking about the *size* of the mandate (as the original post did)? All mandates would be exactly the same, would they not? Either you won, or you didn’t.

The Mandrake the Magician Sunday strip from September 6, 1959.
In this six panel color Sunday strip, a man is walking down the street when he is suddenly held up by a talking horse holding a gun.

And sure, why not: one time I got to see Boulez conduct The Rite of Spring, and the way he handled the end of act one is still the standard by which I judge every other performance.

I also have fond memories of seeing GWAR at the little club in my college town. GWAR has a *dedicated* fanbase. When they came on stage, the crowd went fully bananas. And then Oderus Urungus grabbed the mic, and shouted: “Shut the fuck up! When I want your approval, I WILL BEAT IT OUT OF YOU!!”

I’ve seen P-Funk twice, and one time the show went so well that the venue literally had to turn off the band’s microphones, at which point George Clinton led the crowd in a chant of “ain’t no party like a P-Funk party, ‘cause a P-Funk party don’t stop!” for what seemed like ten minutes straight.

looking things up for the crossword is also breaking the rules, IMO if you don’t happen to know who “Carl of Red Sox Fame” might be, then you treat that clue as “36 across: random assortment of letters (11),” and pray that you can clue it in from the verticals

A better comparison than the drum machine might be radio (where, sure, there’s that one John Cage piece, and also there’s something to be said for the role of radio DJs in creating scenes and subcultures… but nothing like the explosion of creativity that you get with the synth or the TR808, right?)

Jordan Carmalt Stokes @floreustebius.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
I wonder if the difference here is that, where drum machines were primarily aimed at the supply side (a tool to make it cheaper/easier to make music that you would then distribute), AI music is primarily aimed at the demand side (a tool to make music that you immediately consume yourself)

The Táin is one of the stranger bits of ancient epic literature. It has moments of incredible beauty and grandeur, but the other 80% is just walking through the Irish landscape like “ah, and now we come to Jamestown, so named because this is where Cú Chulainn beat James to death with a rock.”

I’m just a simple country lawyer, but it seems to me that if we had a whole bunch of additional economic-sanctions-type levers to pull, and the choice that we made instead was to (checks notes) blow up a school full of children, we uhhhhhh deserve to burn in hell

See this is the problem with running your financial system on specie! Whether it’s cheese or gold, hard currency is vulnerable to exogenous shocks. (Luckily in America, we have long since embraced Fiat Cheese, wherein the government tells you “that’s cheese” and you just have to deal with it.)

Rainy is particularly interesting for his ability to do funny action, scary action, heroic action… sometimes all in the same movie. But whatever mood he’s going for, the space is always fully legible, the timing is just so, and every collision feels weighty and physical.

Kurosawa is a good pull here. He uses action sparingly in a lot of his films, but when it does hit it’s goddamn electric.

Bluey is a good example of Todorov’s Fantastic in that you never quite know whether the parents are playing pretend or whether something supernatural’s at work Just as in the gothic works Todorov studied, the naturalistic explanation is *pretty* clearly right… but there’s just enough room for doubt

I found this oddly moving, yeah. Also, that there are thousands and thousands of people who are young enough that they’ve never seen Page in anything else — people for whom he will probably always be “oh yeah, that guy from the Odyssey, he was really good in that.”
