As far as New Vegas characters go I think Ulysses is not very interesting or pleasant, he's got like galaxy-brain disease about everything.

In Fallout: New Vegas if you take the "Here and Now" perk as your level 50 perk it doesn't do anything, you get nothing. Might have been cool (and a much needed buff to the perk) to have been a way to squeeze one more level out of things. Idk what happens if you take it at 30 with Logan:s Loophole.

I'm not a fan of the modern retro PC cases with the fake floppy drive covers and as much as I love optical drives I can just use an external one. A Corsair 4000D painted beige is probably my ideal retro case at this point.

Replaying Fallout New Vegas. During the quest where you hire the bodyguard in Freeside and find out he's staging attacks to drum up business, if you have a random encounter that pulls him close enough to the gate he'll have different dialogue and the quest will update to say you've learned nothing!

If you've never played either I highly recommend! Myst is of course a classic but there is something _special_ about Riven. I will say that if you're stuck at the beginning click on some door hinges, the first puzzle is the easiest to miss IMO.

This has been one of the most satisfying commissions I had in a while... I LOVED working on this ship, for as much hard work as it was. I inspired myself on Moebius' work, my idol when it comes to this type of work.

wxRuby is amazing and I would support it's adoption into the Ruby standard library.

My PhD advisor occasionally gives me a category of homework questions to ask LLMs and asks me to report what types of problems they can do easily and which they struggle with. He uses this info to fine tune his homework assignments and give conference talks to other professors on how to do the same.

I actually think Glimmer is kinda bad and sucks all the oxygen out of the room for Ruby GUI development. We need one good Tkinter but instead we have a dozen half finished toys.

A big unspoken advantage Java and Python had was a GUI toolkit in the standard library. Swing and Tkinter are not at all pretty but they work and you aren't left guessing if they'll evaporate in six months.

The GPLv3 is something I'm rather fond of and a lot of the developer whinging over it is just nonsense. Your hypothetical cases have already been tested in court, they're not real. At some point running GIMP on Windows doesn't make you obligated to released the Windows source because it doesn't.

Zed added a way to hide the sign in button! Looks like it was a while ago. I know it's petty but that was the last thing that kept me from switching. I love the idea of Emacs and in my time using it it's gotten a lot more modern but it's pulling teeth to get it to cooperate with me regardless.

Any criticism of the fiddlyness of Linux needs to clear the hurdle of the operating system needing to be installed in the first place. Almost anyone who's using desktop Linux has done that and anything less complicated is fine.

The primary problem I had with mastodon, a project I believed in and worked towards and spent a lot of time with several accounts on different instances, was constant bickering about what other instances to defederate/ban. Constantly! "Oh this instance didn't ban this other instance we banned, ban!"

One of the themes of the Star Wars Prequels (especially Clone Wars) that I think is really prescient is people caring more about proper punishments for the bad guys than democracy leading to fascism. I think this is important in regards to the constant "why didn't my fav kids show kill everyone??"

Also given recent developments I'd like to clarify that my previous hot takes on adding engineering classes to humanities degree programs was predicted on those programs being inherently valuable and worth continuing.

I am going through LeetCode day by day to better learn ruby. It is interesting coming through the pipeline like this, all the material is geared towards learning theory but I write theory already! Doesn't mean I can tell you if any? or values.any? is a faster way to search a hash intuitively.

This is me saying that I, as a CS grad student with a pretty good grasp on writing, could probably blab my way through a single 300s level HIST/LIT/PHIL* class. A humanities grad student would choke on the first electrical eng class. Maybe they could get through civ eng surveying if they use stats.

I've become more skeptical of the notion that what's needed is more humanities education for engineers, I don't know of any engineering program at a major university that does not require some ethics and history classes. No university requires their humanities students to take an engineering class.

After five long years I think I finally have a working and comfortable Emacs config! The secret was "server-after-make-frame-hook" which for some reason never came up in my searches for "emacs hook that runs after a frame is created." I used it to make sure treemacs starts with each frame. :P

I bought an off brand Wii remote plus and it's pretty decent. With the sensor bar at the bottom of the screen it's pointing is awful, but on top it's pretty good. Wonder if the remote is failing to obey the console setting for the sensor bar position? Might buy another and open it up.

Intel's Pentium processor (1993) can compute sines, logarithms, and other special functions. To do this, it has a ROM with 304 floating-point constants. I reverse-engineered this ROM and extracted the constants. You can see pi in the ROM, binary 11.001001..., encoded in the transistor pattern. 1/n

A diagram showing how pi is encoded in the Pentium chip. The Pentium has a ROM to hold constants in the lower right. Zooming in on the ROM shows how it holds exponents in the left and the signficand in the right. Zooming in more shows the individual transistors in the ROM. Eight bits are indicated with arrows, the binary bits that start pi.

I finished my comprehensive exams! For me there were only two, the programming languages one I feel pretty confident in even if I ran out of time for one question. The other one is 50/50 depending on how forgiving they'll be about my "loose" phrasing.

C++ Tip 4! The order you declare variables in a struct or class matters! Member variables are put in memory in the order they are declared but they will be aligned/padded to blocks the size of the largest member. Generally its best to order member variables from smallest to largest or vice-versa.

Color-highlighted C++ code demoing how variable order can effect the amount of padding and therefore size of structs or classes. The code:

#include <iostream>
using namespace std;

struct bad {
double a;
int b;
double c;
int d;
};

struct good {
double a;
double c;
int b;
int d;
};

int main() {
// This would output "sizeof(bad): 32"
cout<<"sizeof(bad): "<<sizeof(bad)<<endl;

// This would output "sizeof(good): 24"
cout<<"sizeof(good): "<<sizeof(good)<<endl;
return 0;
}

A small screenshot of a terminal showing the program in the previous picture being compiled and ran.
