If you just substitute the words 'working age' for 'fighting age', suddenly the arrival of youngish men and women doesn't sound threatening. Rather, it sounds like exactly what we need for an ageing population.

This is true in Japanese as well, for the most part. "Don't use anime to learn Japanese or you'll sound like an anime character." was something one of my Japanese teachers said. I've always imagined the opposite: somebody who learned English from cartoons and sounds like Spongebob Squarepants.

I was a bit wrong here, there are a couple open source licenses that specifically say the software isn’t intended for use in life critical applications but going back and looking, Apache and BSD don’t have that language

I do think this should put some of the hand-wringing over the uniquely sinful American electorate, uniquely feckless institutions, etc in perspective. The truth is that there is a large trans-national constituency of people who actively want this. They aren’t deceived. They want this.

Obsessed with this van in my town owned by someone who is in a feud with a local car dealer (Pohanka) for not honoring the warranty on their van so they spite covered that same van front to back in stickers with bad reviews, emails from the owner, and “Puck Fohanka.” 10/10 Hater behavior.

The thing is at the end of the day you need to debug a production issue and that does require understanding how everything works. At this point in my career it’s been a very long time since I’ve written all the code Im responsible for so this isn’t that big a change

At work we review ai generated PRs pretty thoroughly. There are different approaches people take there. I’m aware of projects where basically nobody reviews the code and instead focuses entirely on regression and acceptance testing but I’m not convinced that’s a good idea in the long run

Prediction of the year, 1995: Internet ‘will soon go spectacularly supernova’
The Internet’s emergence into mainstream consciousness in 1995 was met no small amount of skepticism and eye-rolling. It was all overhyped, critics said. A distraction. Notable among the skep…

To elaborate a bit for people who aren’t familiar, the Apache and BSD licenses are written in such a way that you can use them in your work without ever asking a lawyer in basically every circumstance outside of like nuclear reactors

The PPSSPP story is deliciously ironic when they frame it as "stolen code" They wanted someone to not use code generation so as to respect the copyrights of software engineers. Except for the ones they were disrespecting by playing emulated games for copies of games they almost certainly don't have

The thing about staffing that gets a lot less attention is you can also be wildly more ambitious with the same team. The thing we do at work would be like 1/3 as sophisticated id we were doing it a few years ago

And the reality is that AI really doesn't replace engineers. It acts as an accelerant for people who already know what they're doing. You maybe don't need as big a team, but the efficiency gains are real but not "omg the industry is over."
