Matt Kean, the chair of the Climate Change Authority and a former NSW treasurer and energy minister, questioned why the state Independent Planning Commission had not weighed the economic cost of climate change caused by burning the coal from the Hunter Valley Operations mine before giving it the green light to run until 2045. Rate rises hit mortgage holders, first-home buyers and jobs, while doing nothing to fix many of the supply shocks driving prices higher. Governments need to carry more of the burden through taxation and responsible budgets.

David Shoebridge wants the Greens to ‘seize this moment’. Is his more combative style the answer?
New leader says his party must connect with millions of disaffected voters and ‘make them believe in politics again’ * Follow our Australia news live blog for latest updates * Get our new political email, free app or daily news podcast As One Nation’s polling surged this year, and Pauline Hanson ate away at the votes of first the Coalition and then Labor, one curious mainstay emerged; the Greens remained seemingly anchored to the 10-12% range, no matter which poll you look at. That’s despite the fact that, arguably, there’s rarely been more fertile political ground for the Greens leader to reap rewards; a centrist Labor government with a big majority but increasingly on the nose, a resurgent anti-immigration populist party backed by Australia’s richest mining billionaire, a Coalition in disarray, a cost-of-living crisis set ablaze by rising interest rates and inflation, and a public increasingly alarmed about the nexus of big tech, big datacentres and shadowy AI oligarchs operating with impunity. National Bogong Moth Day would be a worth public holiday every year. Certainly better than having a day off for the Melbourne Cup!
Top Section
• Visuals: A line of small, abstract cartoon figures and moths are marching from left to right on a patch of green grass against a light blue sky.
	• The figure on the far left holds a tall pole with a large moth model on top, resembling a parade float.
	• One character wears a full moth costume.
	• Other characters carry small signs. One sign reads "THANK A MOTH" and another reads "SAY NO TO PORCH LIGHTS."
	• A character toward the right holds a green flag that says "BOGONG."
• Text: Speech bubbles at the top read: "Surely bogong moth migration season should have a public holiday and some sort of parade or festival... Bogong Moth day!"
Bottom Section
• Visuals: The background is a solid off-white. In the bottom right corner, a single cartoon moth is holding a smartphone, seemingly reading the text.
• Text: The main caption reads: "Remember - these moths are not an inconvenience they are a blessing. EVERY MOTH IS PRECIOUS. Perhaps they are a sign that all is not lost..."
