Out on @secretsandspies.bsky.social! I spoke with @jobywarrick.bsky.social, two-time Pulitzer winner, about his excellent new book on Carlos the Jackal, and why the deniable, terror-for-hire model he pioneered is back in Russia’s and Iran’s contract attacks on the West. Links below. Check it out.

This is like the 3rd tweet in as many weeks from Mehdi that doesnt just walk up to the line of antisemitism, but willfully crosses it. At some point a conversation needs to be had about his spiraling into pretty blatant right wing talking points.

Of course they do. Why would anyone not want to be French ? This is partially based on a conversation I had with a co worker who wouldn’t believe I was not French (I do not speak French and he is French).

Listen if Elon Musk did something cool I'm not the type to say it's uncool just to follow the herd but I've seen this clip a dozen times and I'm still unsure what I'm supposed to think is cool here. My definition of flying car is "car that flies", not "car that shoots steam to break its fall".

French riots might ostensibly be good news for Marine Le Pen and RN. But possible there might be a serious backlash vs LFI and Melenchon, which in turn puts a centrist into final two, and thus hurts Le Pen. Political implications of riots are complex.

Also my ass pays more in pension taxes now because we raised taxes for it. Not all of Europe is taxed out like France. People do get the trade offs and they grumble but they go with it.

It’s also not pretty or clean and a lot of people aren’t thrilled but the conscription debate is coming back here in Luxembourg. They abolished it in 1962 and they are talking about bringing it back. The world has changed and the response as been to slow but it’s coming and picking up speed.

And none of this means EU leaders want a split, but the reality and the discussion on the ground is very different from what people post on this site and elsewhere. During the Cold War europe maintained high military budgets and social spending and we will return to that. It’s slow.

I get skepticism about the EU, but a lot of stuff is changing on the ground and it won’t easily be reversed. I do think @aphclarkson.bsky.social is right that one day the US will wake up and realise that the EU doesn’t need them in the same way, and they will be confused and mad.

Why would Le Pen stop selling weapons to Canada or stop supporting them? What makes anyone think that the US will actually be stable? Americans make themselves feel better by thinking that things can’t change and that we’d all be screwed without them. They put their anxiety on the rest of us.

Weird research question but if someone was born in the 30s, lower class British, fought in the war and is now an old man in the 80s after a rough life of criminal exploits, would they use ‘fuck’ as a term of emphasis or is that a more modern or US thing?

My wife’s uncle (member of the socialist party here) said that he met some younger American activists and basically thought that they don’t really know what socialism is. He said it seemed like a label and not really a policy prescription or what not. I think for some people it is just label.

I will say in Europe at least, you do not hear about this kind of behavior from the companies that get CCTV contracts. I am sure there are issues but they dont seem to be as widespread or at least they lie more with the authorities.
