Oh I see what you mean. Yes that’s a great idea.

Ah I never considered that. A bit less contact surface but less friction on the legs I guess?

Maybe something more delicate than my dad’s old flathead screwdriver for levering them out, too. 🤔

Hopefully they’re broadly useful enough to stay around for a while🤞 Now you mention it I see new DIPs are running out, I should grab a few before they do …and maybe some ZIF sockets for testing so I don’t fatigue the legs off of these one too! 😆

Right, thanks, that makes sense! I’m also writing a custom ROM to drive it (and therefore a custom interrupt handler too) so I was starting to suspect that’s where my problem is. Anyway Ed’s AY interface has plenty of jumper settings to choose from at least! 😅

Ooh yeah, heres a quick test with the key ring version. Looks pretty snazzy!

Funnily enough I’m right in the middle of experimenting with AY-on-SAM. I think the Speccy-style AY port addressing (FFFD, BFFD) is clashing with SAM’s MIDI (xxFD). It works if I use other ports (e.g. D0,D8) but perhaps a software translation to SAA might be the way to go!

I’ve submitted a couple of disks that were missing from World of SAM archive. Issues 4A and 4B of diskzine SCPDU — SAM Coupé Public Domain Update.
Photograph of SAM computer with a disk partially inserted into the floppy disk drive, and two more disks on the desk in front of the machine. Very carefully staged and photographed to give the impression of ineffably cool nonchalance. Text on the frontmost disk reads “S. C. P. D. U. ISSUE 4A, Everything you need to know about Public Domain”Photo of a pretty standard PC 3.5" diskette drive connected via ribbon cable to a Greaseweazle doodah. Someone really cool has put stickers on the disk to prove how cool they are. Text on the stickers reads “LETS GET PHYSICAL” and “DS0” (hinting that the drive is wired to the Shugart standard rather than the more common “IBM PC” way of doing things. Did I mention the owner of this gear is really cool?)

I had a run-in with a fake/repainted GAL chip at the weekend (eBay, amirite?) It would read and write as expected in the programmer but would NOT work in-circuit. Anyway I wanted learn a bit more about these devices, found this video which was a good introduction: youtu.be/fo_WlA-kV…

Great horror takes the mundane and contorts it into something terrifying, but I think Townfall might even take that a step further by using the trappings of survival horror to contextualise the real, intensely upsetting source material: some people have to grow up in Fife

Ben's kits were (pun intended!) delightful. To say I was a bit rusty, well I had to upgrade my gas-powered soldering iron, and actually buy some flush cutters… but the build process went very smoothly thanks in large part to the methodical labeling and good instructions! Pic from August 2020.

Recently I was looking up info (about a ZX/Epson printer driver) and Google pointed me to a 1995 thread of a guy asking how to make backup tape of a worn-out original. Well, he must’ve managed because I now have that very copy—he’d put his name in some unrelated BASIC progs on the same tape. Heh!

D’oh! Easily done, hopefully it’s ok! I was fiddling with the light diffuser on my LED matrix the other day, accidentally shorted-out two adjacent modules 😱 Thankfully it just hung the system and didn’t blow anything up! I’ve been using little insulation cards since, I ought to fit standoffs tho 😅

Nah not physically. Just grabbing the volume values from a buffer in the player routine (thanks to @stefandrissen.bsky.social’s E-Tracker disassembly!) and outputting to a different LED row on each loop.

I’ve got an 8x8 matrix display, but it needs to be multiplexed though so it’s hard to film without a photosensitivity warning 🤩
This is a picture of my Peacock Media 8x8 LED module for RC2014. The LED rows are lit showing the binary values of various SAA registers. The display is “multiplexed” so in this still image only some rows are illuminated. The in-person (with human persistence of vision) experience is much better.

Yerzmyey’s Arcane Zone part two played back via E-Tracker v1.2 for SAM Coupé on #RC2014 with Quazar’s #SAA1099P sound card and using a Small Computer Central SC737 interrupt module for 50Hz playback timing. The front panel LEDs are showing SAA channel zero’s amplitude. 🤘🎶

I had no phone for a couple of weeks there—due to a mishap with a swimming pool—and thus had no podcasts to listen to on-the-go either, so of course I did the sensible thing and dubbed them to cassette tape for portable listening. #elegant #civilised

🪄 Turbosound ✨ The Next has a nice implementation (actually 3x AY, the original was 2x). You can toggle ABC, ACB, Mono by twiddling ports. But it also has a bunch of DACs mixed in too anyway (SpecDrum etc).

Robert @flatduckrecords.co.uk · 26/08/2026
Legend has it that "ACB" (left, right, both) is the Eastern Europe and demosceney way (so that's what I use because I'm Cool™) and "ABC" (left, both, right) is the Western way. But I read that Yerzmyey (one of my faves) says mono is best, so that's good enough for me! zxart.ee/author/2257/...
