Funnily enough I’m right in the middle of experimenting with AY-on-SAM. I think the Speccy-style AY port addressing (FFFD, BFFD) is clashing with SAM’s MIDI (xxFD). It works if I use other ports (e.g. D0,D8) but perhaps a software translation to SAA might be the way to go!

I’ve submitted a couple of disks that were missing from World of SAM archive. Issues 4A and 4B of diskzine SCPDU — SAM Coupé Public Domain Update.
Photograph of SAM computer with a disk partially inserted into the floppy disk drive, and two more disks on the desk in front of the machine. Very carefully staged and photographed to give the impression of ineffably cool nonchalance. Text on the frontmost disk reads “S. C. P. D. U. ISSUE 4A, Everything you need to know about Public Domain”Photo of a pretty standard PC 3.5" diskette drive connected via ribbon cable to a Greaseweazle doodah. Someone really cool has put stickers on the disk to prove how cool they are. Text on the stickers reads “LETS GET PHYSICAL” and “DS0” (hinting that the drive is wired to the Shugart standard rather than the more common “IBM PC” way of doing things. Did I mention the owner of this gear is really cool?)

Ben's kits were (pun intended!) delightful. To say I was a bit rusty, well I had to upgrade my gas-powered soldering iron, and actually buy some flush cutters… but the build process went very smoothly thanks in large part to the methodical labeling and good instructions! Pic from August 2020.

I’ve got an 8x8 matrix display, but it needs to be multiplexed though so it’s hard to film without a photosensitivity warning 🤩
This is a picture of my Peacock Media 8x8 LED module for RC2014. The LED rows are lit showing the binary values of various SAA registers. The display is “multiplexed” so in this still image only some rows are illuminated. The in-person (with human persistence of vision) experience is much better.

Here look, I’ve coaxed SAM Coupé into running SCC’s Small Computer Monitor, and Microsoft BASIC (lifted from the RC2014 ROM). It doesn’t know about SAM’s screen or keyboard (etc) so communication is over serial. (It’s easy enough to output some text to the LCD though)

Text on the screen in black-on-white, reads “1) MicroSoft BASIC” and “2) Small Computer Monitor”.Closeup picture of SAM Coupé with serial interface and LCD attached. Text on the display reads “MICROSOFT BASIC ON SAM COUPE”. Photograph of a laptop screen. The running program is a terminal, running Tio serial terminal emulator. The information listed shows we are connected to USB serial, and the output is being generated by SAM. Microsoft BASIC is starting up and we’ve typed in a short program. The program accepts user input and displays it on the attached LCD.Another picture of a laptop screen showing a text terminal, this time showing Stephen C Cousins’ “Small Computer Monitor” running on SAM and connected over USB serial. Text on screen is a listing of the SCM commands.

I’ve set SAM’s “any interrupt” vector to point to a custom routine that checks for incoming serial data and then stuffs it into the edit buffer, as if you’d typed it locally. Not very useful, but kind of interesting?

The program is just REM statements paraphrasing what I wrote in the main body of the skeet to which this picture is attached. (I.e. that it’s just a working-but-janky proof that it works).

I’ve hooked up Tynemouth Software’s 68B50 serial card to SAM. It has its own clock so it’s nicely self contained. I’ve got the basics working, I’ll do more later. (LCD’s not related but I’ve been playing with that too!) #RC2014 #SamCoupé

Ah, PLAY and SPECTRUM tokens sit where UDGs T, U normally do, so they are actually *below* the BTRANS token table; byte-aligned to &xxA5 (i.e. RND). The two bytes below that are used by BTRANS to track the length of the BASIC line being processed… so which token you get for PLAY/SPECTRUM will vary!
One of @breakintoprogram.co.uk‬'s indispensable tables! This one lists the ZX Spectrum character set, including control codes and BASIC keyword tokens. The table is rendered in calming and reassuring peachy pastel shades.Part of my SkoolKit disassembly of BTRANS, this screen shows the overall memory layout. The main points I'm referring to in this post, is that the token table sits just above a pointer value (which I have unhelpfully labelled as "a pointer to something"!)

Issue 100 of Outlet claims there ought to be a file called DBT.BAS on the SAM System Disk (but I can’t find it!) OUTLET is a great source of BASIC progs but as Brian alludes they are NOT straightforward! All sorts of inventive hacks and POKEs are employed (to great effect) but …not very portable!
Brian Cavers to Peter Beane
No, it is not practical to convert the Disciple/+D OUTLET to SAM. I said “practical” rather than “possible” because with a huge amount of effort you might. Simple, straightforward BASIC can be converted using DBT.BAS on the MGT SAM system disk. It does not appear on the system menu program (the version on that only loads from tape) so you will probably have to load it direct. It prompts for a file name. Put a Spectrum +D disk in the SAM and enter its file-name. It loads and, after a few seconds (depending on the size of the program) it converts it to SAM BASIC which you can then save to SAM disk.

I have put together a SAM Coupé program for importing Spectrum BASIC from disk, including variables, auto-run etc. The translation is based on BTRANS from the MGT Utility Tapes to which I (after hacking it to bits) added variable importing and disk support.

I’m a big fan of LBiP tables! My top two are the character set and the memory layout. 🏓
Screenshot from Dean’s blog showing how a 16 memory address relates to pixels on a ZX Spectrum display. The lower four bits give the X coordinate, the next eight encode the y-coordinate (but their order is not contiguous) and the top three bits are always 010. It looks mental but Dean explains it eloquently on his blog!

For the mildly interested: the interesting part was using some SjASMPlus macros and IFDEFs so that one source file can be used to create all three versions. They are mostly the same but the key differences are: start address, print routine, and general vector for calling arbitrary ZX ROM routines. 🤓
macOS screenshot, of an application window. The appication is Nova. The window is split into three panes, left side is the files list showing ASM source files. The bottom pane is a terminal emulator showing command line output from a successful run the SjASMPlus assembler, including some useful values such as the routine start address and total length.

Just for fun, I made a SAM Coupé disk for Go-Go Bunnygun. It’s a neat self-contained 48K Spectrum game so all it really needs is a few bytes of machine code to shuffle SAM memory into a suitable configuration (screen at $4000, game at $8000).
