If you allow me one more remark: i think what makes it look artificial is the uniformity of the grass on the hills. Adding a bit of different color on the steeper sides or the "weather side" would elevate it with not a lot of work. Just make sure to have a consistent logic to it.

The versus mode idea came when we introduced a free phase before the match. The players can hang around the field with the ball before deciding to start so naturally 4 players with a ball kind of became 2 vs 2. It WILL be harder that wrapping this in some logic but it is not completely out there
