I’ve done a very through analysis of salty drift and the root cause, and I have thoughts… Yes to more evaluation. It’s totally a sensor issue. The trends are real. And there’s a lot more insight to be gained from a sensor-based analysis. Salinity is a computed property.

that's not terrible. now you just hope that some of those 4 km points are consecutive and near a feature!

8 km error went from 9500 positions to 900. For my dataset the mean error was 127 km...
000
Dr. Camille Pagniello (she/her/elle) @fishysounds.bsky.social · 05/12/2024
So saying 99% are still 4 km would be shocking to me, but maybe you are lucky and on a different species and in a different local you get a lot more positions.
100
Dr. Camille Pagniello (she/her/elle) @fishysounds.bsky.social · 05/12/2024
So for example, if you have 100,000 Argos positions, my dataset went to 65,000 when I removed Z class days. For a 9,500 position aniMotum dataset, if you only kept those with 4 km error, you are down to 500 position. At least this is for the dataset that I had.
100
Dr. Camille Pagniello (she/her/elle) @fishysounds.bsky.social · 05/12/2024
I'd also say with aniMotum, you also get some daily locations where there was no Argos position (by design). If you are associating to environmental variables, I tend to only use daily locations where there actually was an Argos position and I absolutely get rid of Z class days.
100
Dr. Camille Pagniello (she/her/elle) @fishysounds.bsky.social · 05/12/2024
Different studies are hard because you essentially need to standardize to the lowest quality tracks to truly compare between years/tags (if that's what you are doing).
100
Dr. Camille Pagniello (she/her/elle) @fishysounds.bsky.social · 05/12/2024
Happy to chat more about this if you'd like, but hopefully what I said made a little sense.
100
Dr. Camille Pagniello (she/her/elle) @fishysounds.bsky.social · 05/12/2024
Do you have any tag environmental data (e.g., temp, salinity, etc.) to confirm? I've moved to describing a large area than trying to associate a position to any feature because of tag error, especially if onboard environmental data is not available.
100
Dr. Camille Pagniello (she/her/elle) @fishysounds.bsky.social · 05/12/2024
You could filter your tracks to only include days with positions with error under the resolution of the environmental data product (e.g., 5 km product, only keep positions with 5 km error or less, 25 km product, only keep positions with 25 km or less) and then see if they are utilizing a feature.
100
Dr. Camille Pagniello (she/her/elle) @fishysounds.bsky.social · 05/12/2024
With any satellite product (such as SSH) or really any other environmental data that you combine with tagging data, there's a scale mismatch problem. So really you have to look at the association of position with error to say whether animals are really interacting with features at any scale.
100
Dr. Camille Pagniello (she/her/elle) @fishysounds.bsky.social · 05/12/2024
ooff. you ask the question I've been really grappling with myself. With Argos data, are you running it through aniMotum or another SSM/HMM and getting error bounds? Are your Argos positions the old 3,2,1,A,B,Z error classes or an actual error in km?
100
Dr. Camille Pagniello (she/her/elle) @fishysounds.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
What product are you using for the fronts? FSLEs? I'm guessing you've got some sort of ARGOS/GPS level accuracy positions being on a penguin?
