Looking forward to what is intended as a starting point for embracing European financial leverage and resilience of its financial architecture.

“Clear evidence of growth expectations: The steepening German yield curve, rising stock prices, euro appreciation, and stable CDS prices collectively indicate that markets interpret Germany’s fiscal expansion as growth-enhancing rather than a reckless fiscal bet.” www.ifw-kiel.de/publications...

New @kiel.institute Policy Brief (with @filpet4.bsky.social): How are capital markets reacting to Germany's proposed €500bn infrastructure investment + defense spending boost? Surging Bund yields reflect growth optimism, not default concerns -- in contrast to the UK's 2022 Truss episode.

Hey Adam, the German unemployment rate in yesterday's newsletter is not correct. Perhaps it is extended measure (like U6), but the standard one looks like this data.ecb.europa.eu/data/dataset...

Apparently they were big in helping apartheid victims, and some pasty billionaire has a beef with that.

“Freedom” is the ability to run graft and keep guns. “Freedom of speech” is attacking everyone who disagrees with you, and set your mob on them if you are Musk.

Murphy: "Let's not pull any punches about why this is happening. Elon Musk makes billions off of his business with China. And China is cheering at this action today. There is no question that the billionaire class trying to take over our govt right now is doing it based on self-interest."

NEW: Sources tell my office that Treasury Secretary Bessent has granted DOGE *full* access to this system. Social Security and Medicare benefits, grants, payments to government contractors, including those that compete directly with Musk's own companies. All of it.

The federal government has intense limits on data sharing in order to protect privacy. Sharing IRS tax data to another part of government *requires an act of Congress.* What constraints are being placed on Musk hoovering up people's personal data?

Is there literature on the impact on tariffs on prices *elsewhere*? If demand for coffee in the US goes down, would prices in Europe fall?

@anneapplebaum.bsky.social this is a fascinating take - I think there are lots of parallels with Dugin, all the more clearer now. In general this fascination with the occult is what makes these types anti-enlightenment and anti-West. Is there any evidence of Dugin having influenced them?

Krugman was (not super) clear that it’s not just about the tech sector, but also about ICT-intensive sectors, like finance and professional services. There was a cottage industry of papers in the 2010s showing just this, culminating in the best titled paper of all time www.hbs.edu/ris/Publicat...

Honestly I would expect novel conspiracy theories to be more prominent in youth. Wouldn't people be less likely to believe horseshit invented after they turned 50?
