And yet I forced you to live #rote #rotespoilers
fanart of fitz and the fool (beloved) from the book series realm of the elderlings by robin hobb. Fool is sitting with his hand on a perhaps dead older Fitz, floating in a deep black water. Beneath Fitz flows a blue cloak with an embroidered charging buck, and around them are faded versions of Fitzes from various ages. One with nighteyes, one with axes, one with a lil puppy, one with needle, etc. A thread of gold goes from Fool's hand on Fitz to all the versions of Fitz below. All the threads of the prophet and its catalyst.

There's a pale gold frame around the painting and a golden twirly cicle around the fool.

Three thousand years ago, a Greek potter looked at a bowl and thought: ‘You know what this needs? A leg!’ Clay bowl with leg-shaped handle!🦵😆 Early Geometric period 850 BC. Altes Museum, Berlin 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows an ancient Greek pottery bowl with a rounded, deep body, wide open mouth and flared rim. It has a large handle shaped like a human leg, extending from the left side of the bowl in my photo, bending at a right angle and ending in a flat foot. The bowl has a camel-coloured surface decorated with dark brown geometric patterns, which include zigzags and meander motifs arranged in horizontal bands around the body of the bowl and along the leg. From Attica, Early Geometric period, circa 850 BC. It sits on a light stone coloured surface in a display case at the Altes Museum in Berlin.

Smile it’s the weekend! A liitle blue hippo made by an Egyptian artisan around 4,000 years ago! 🦛 ❤️ Decorated with river plants and lotus flowers, blue faience hippos are associated with the life-giving Nile and rebirth. Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows an ancient Egyptian ‘roaring’ hippo statuette made of Egyptian blue faience, a ceramic material made of ground quartz. The hippo is seated with head at left, and turned to front. The hippo’s original tusks (the top incisors and lower canine teeth are known as tusks), are missing, so it looks as if the hippo is smiling. The blue body is decorated in black with stylised images of Nile river plants such as water weed and lotus flowers. This decoration depicts the hippo’s marsh habitat as well as having layers of symbolism associated with regeneration e.g. lotus flowers open with the sun in the morning and close at night symbolising rebirth. Height 7.5 cm, length 12.5 cm. On display Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen.

Amazing Ice Age art! The ‘Lady of Brassempouy’ is one of the earliest realistic representations of a human face! A tiny portrait head of a Paleolithic woman, skilfully sculpted from mammoth ivory some 28,0000 years ago! 📷 Musée d'Archéologie Nationale St Germain-en-Laye, Paris #Archaeology
The museum photo shows a close-up view of the front view of the so-called ‘Lady de Brassempouy’ (Dame de Brassempouy) also known as the ‘Lady with the Hood’ (Dame à la capuche). It is a small sculpted portrait head measuring 3.6 cm in height, carved from mammoth tusk some 28,000 years ago during the Upper Paleolithic period. The ivory is a rich cream colour with a polished sheen, against a black background.

She has a delicately carved heart-shaped face, with broad eyebrows, nose, and chin carved in relief. Her eyes have small holes representing her pupils. Her long hair falls to either side of her face and is incised with horizontal and vertical lines like a chequerboard. It’s suggested this may represent braiding. When first found, it was thought the chequerboard pattern represented a decorative hood which gave rise to the name ‘Lady of the Hood’. The neck is elongated with a diagonal break at the bottom. The portrait head was excavated in 1894 by Edouard Piette at the cave ‘Grotte du Pape’, Brassempouy, Landes, France.

Here’s the museum description:
The “Lady with the Hood” or “Dame de Brassempouy” is the most famous and most moving of prehistoric works of art, as she brings us the most real and lifelike image of Palaeolithic woman.

The techniques used to make this statuette are very complex and achieve great visual qualities: incisions for the chequerboard pattern and the facial features, perforation for the pupil of the eyes, scraping and polishing to model the face.

This “first human face”, sculpted from the ivory core of a mammoth tusk, is very striking. It is sub-triangular in shape and well balanced. The forehead, eyebrows, nose and chin are in relief. The only visible part of the eyes is the pupil, particularly the one on the right.

Ancient Egyptian hedgehog shaped pottery vessel 🦔❤️ Dated c. 1539-1292 BC. Ashmolean Museum 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a small, rounded, red polished pottery vessel shaped like a hedgehog. It has a globular body, resting on four short, stubby feet. The clay is a warm reddish-brown with a smooth surface with dark painted details. The hedgehog’s face projects from the front of the vessel with a pointed snout. The almond shaped eyes, and large round ears are painted dark brown/black. Around the face there are short, dark, painted lines suggesting spines. The face is framed on either side of the vessel by curving moulded lines painted dark brown perhaps suggesting the animal’s spines or foliage habitat. A short, cylindrical spout rises from the top of the vessel above the head, serving as an opening for pouring. There is a small handle at the back of the spout not seen in my photo. Dimensions: 8.8 x 7.1 x 7.4 cm (length x width x depth). The vessel is on a glass display shelf at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. It was excavated at a cemetery at Abydos and was allocated to the Ashmolean Museum by the Egypt Exploration Fund in 1900.

Hedgehogs had protective associations in ancient Egypt. Because they curl into a spiny ball and prey on snakes and scorpions, they were regarded as apotropaic (protective) animals. Hedgehog-shaped vessels are thought to have held liquids such as oils, perfumes, milk, or water and are frequently found in funerary contexts, suggesting they also had a symbolic role in burials.

Kitty paw prints on a Roman clay tile! 😻 🐾 A tiny moment in time preserved in clay some 2,000 years ago when a kitten walked across this wet clay tile which was lying out to dry before firing. Lullingstone Roman Villa, Kent 📷 by me #Caturday #Archaeology
My photo shows two kitten pawprints imprinted on a Roman red clay roof tile (tegula). There are two prints, one print near the upper left corner of the tile and another below it closer to the centre. Each imprint has four toe pads arranged in a gentle arc at the top of a larger central pad. There are no visible claw marks (unlike with dogs prints) as cats usually retract their claws when walking.
The imprints were made as a kitten walked across a wet clay tile which was lying out to dry before firing. The tile was found at Lullingstone Roman Villa in Kent, where it is on display at the site museum.

An ancient Greek silver coin depicting a bee! 🐝 😍 Minted in Ephesus, 390-380 BC. Photo Getty Museum #Archaeology
A Getty Museum photo showing a silver tetradrachm (four-drachma coin) stamped in high relief on the obverse of the coin with a bee viewed from above, within a dotted border. It is dark grey silver against a lighter grey background. Relief details include legs, wings, antennae, segmented abdomen and sting. The Greek letters, Ε (‘epsilon’) and Φ (‘phi’), an abbreviation for ‘Ephesus’, are placed either side of the bee. Diameter 7 mm.

From the museum catalogue:
“The reverse shows the foreparts of a stag kneeling in right profile, looking back towards a palm tree. An inscription to the right reads ΚΑΡΝΩ[Ψ] (‘KARNO[PS]’).
The bee, stag, and palm are all emblems of Ephesus, a Greek city on the west coast of Turkey. This city was an important center of worship for the Greek goddess Artemis, and the images on Ephesian coinage typically promote this association. The bee was originally the symbol of an early Anatolian goddess who the Greeks later identified with their goddess, Artemis; so close was the connection that the priestesses of the goddess were called "honey bees." The two Greek letters, Ε (‘epsilon’) and Φ (‘phi’), are an abbreviation for Ephesus. The palm tree alludes to Artemis' birth beneath a palm tree on the island of Delos. The stag – an animal sacred to Artemis – symbolizes the goddess' role as protector of wild animals, and may also refer to the sculptures that flanked her cult statue in the temple at Ephesus”

To bring a smile to your face, here’s a c. 4,500 year-old clay vase in the shape of a little hedgehog holding a bowl! 🦔 😍 From Chalandriani, Syros, Greece. Early Cycladic II period. National Archaeological Museum, Athens 📷 ArchaiOptix #Archaeology
The image shows a small zoomorphic (animal-shaped) painted ceramic vase viewed in 3/4 profile facing right. It is usually interpreted as a hedgehog (sometimes a bear), with a rounded body, sitting on its hind legs, and holding a shallow open bowl infront of its body with its front paws. It has a long snout which rests on the rim of the bowl, and two small, now chipped, ears. The clay is painted with light yellow slip decorated with dark pigment. Dark painted details include a vertical line down the front of the body with diagonal stripes either side of the vertical line, cross-hatched markings on the back (just seen in photo) made up of horizontal and vertical lines thought to represent spines, two dark circle and dot eyes, a dark painted end of snout, five sharp dark claws holding onto the side of the bowl, and a dark band around the top of the bowl. The body is hollow and the bowl connects to the interior so that it could be used as a container or rhyton (pouring vessel for liquids). It is about 10.8 cm tall. It was found in a burial at a major Early Bronze Age cemetery of the Cyclades, at Chalandriani on the Greek island of Syros. Keros-Syros Culture, Early Cycladic II period (2800-2300 BC). It is part of the collections at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.

Realm of the Elderlings scene of all time that makes me cry every time I read it, now as one of my evil manuscripts 😭👍 #rote
A medieval manuscript-style digital drawing across two folios. The verso is mainly a text block, with text in a gothic script from Assassin's Fate chapter "Lies and Truths" describing Fitz calling for Beloved and Beloved joining him to finish carving the stone wolf. There are two small illustrations: one of Fitz reaching a hand out to call Beloved, and one of Beloved tenderly putting their arm around Fitz and cupping his face in their palm. There's a border around the outer three sides of the folio, filled with plants, scrolling motifs, and small drawings of Nighteyes and Tintaglia. On the recto folio, most of the space is taken up by an arched frame filled with a drawing of Fitz cradled by Beloved, whose free hand is resting on the stone wolf as it comes to llfe. Gold light striates out from them. There's text beneath the illustration reading "Briefer than an instant, I saw light striate out from them. A nexus, a node on the path of fate. Then it was finished. Something finally complete, as it should have been." There's a border all around the text and illustration, filled with plants, scrolling motifs, and small illustrations of Ratsy, Heeby, and some bees.

Some 3,300 years ago, an ancient Egyptian artist painted this comic illustration of a cat herding geese! 😻 They used a flake of limestone as a sketchpad for this fun scene. From Deir el-Medina, Thebes. 📷 Egyptian Museum, Cairo. #Archaeology
The image shows a buff-coloured flake of limestone with a painted illustration of a cat herding geese, displayed against a black background. On the left of the scene, a tabby cat (brown with black line markings) stands on its hind legs in a human-like pose, facing right. In its upraised left paw it holds out a wooden staff to keep six geese in order. In its right paw it is holding the end of a long crook which it rests on its shoulder. A bag hangs by a strap from the end of the crook behind the cat. The six geese in front of the cat are arranged in two rows of three, one row above the other. The geese have brown legs, and white bodies with black plummage detail. Three of the geese have black painted heads and necks; top left, top right, and bottom middle. Above the geese there is a curved double brown line representing a nest filled with four white eggs in a row. Flake dimensions: H 11 cm x W 11 cm.

Had the chance to paint this piece for the Mistborn expansion of the Cosmere RPG ✨ Huge thanks to AD Matt Demino for the fun assignment and guidance! #cosmererpg Prints are already available in my INPRNT shop 💛 So excited about this release… can’t wait to get my hands on the physical books!
