In today's diary, I get into one of my favorite subjects: agency in historical games. Did the Opium Wars have to happen? Were the player's historical counterparts in a position to prevent them? It's a big subject, and a place where the 2e differs sharply from 1e. boardgamegeek.com/thread/37746...

1/2 Geoff has an interesting observation concerning how humanity may have to adapt to maintain its mental acuity in a world of AI. It echoes James Dunnigan, founder of SPI, who called wargaming the hobby of the overeducated.

A rainy evening made for the perfect excuse to finally learn @gmtgames.bsky.social 's Cuius Regio which I'm pairing with C.V. Wedgewood's book on the 30 Years War. I've wanted to read this book for so long, and it does not disappoint. I can't believe she was so young when she wrote it (late 20s!).

Cuius Regio, escenario 3.

Cool! I have been delighted with it so far. I actually find Cuius even more interesting than GCACW, while also smoother. It adds interaction of operational maneuver with logistics - forage and winter quartering - & diplomacy - the patchwork allegiances to either Imperialist or Protestant causes.

Same logic applies to the Alsace/Lorraine grouping. It's a modeling simplification, not a claim there's only one valid way to slice it. If your group prefers different names or borders, go for it. House rules are exactly the kind of engagement we love seeing. Enjoy the game your way!

Really appreciate the detail here. This comes up a lot, since XVII-century sources disagree wildly on naming across the map, and we've had this same debate for many regions, not just Alsace. We made calls we felt were defensible, but reasonable people land differently, and that's fine.
