I really do think tech crossed a line at some point between "helping you do the things you want to do" on the one hand, and "helping you do the things tech wants you to do" on the other. At this point, we're all contorting ourselves to live how the tech industry thinks we should be living.

I hate AI slop. I hate AI art. I hate AI music. Writing is definitely best left to humans. But in the field of software development, we've hit a revolutionary tipping point. 2026 is the year when the models became good enough to solve hard problems autonomously. this is the new reality.

⚒️ Bronze Age high-tech! Nearly 4,000 years ago, this ingenious stone mould could cast five different sizes of flat axe! Cutting-edge technology from a time when metal was replacing stone, bone and wooden tools! Found in Shropshire in 1961. Shrewsbury Museum 📷 by me #FindsFriday #Archaeology
My photo shows a carved stone axe mould made from Carboniferous Grit displayed on a clear acrylic museum stand. It is roughly a cuboid rectangular, weathered stone block with a recessed axe-shaped cavity on the top face and two axe-shaped cavities on the front face (one small, one large). In total there are moulds for five metal flat axes though not all can be seen in my photo. It was found at Walleybourne Brook, Pontesbury/Church Purverbatch, Shropshire, in 1961. Dated to the Bronze Age, 1900-1700 BC.

out it goes: my long post about Rachel Hope Cleves's claim that Tillie Walden plagiarised her book. It's long because Cleves's claim is much, much more bizarre than it looked on first reading. I'm not going to bury the lede here. Cleves's claim does not hold up. buttondown.com/thene/archiv...
stick a pin in this metaphor

…because these covers are a microcosm of the entire conflict; Walden's book is mostly built on writing and other objects left by Sylvia Drake, Charity Bryant, and others. Her work includes many elements from these records that Cleves does not refer to in her book, and many of her interpretations of those records are different from Cleves's interpretations, often intentionally so. In addition to her historical basis, Walden's book includes fictional dialogue and story elements that are original to her work, some of which are inspired by Walden's own life.

15,000 years ago, in one of the the earliest settled communities in the world, a child collected fine clay from the slow-moving river by her home. She then committed an act familiar to all inveterate play-doh enthusiasts; rolling and and pinching the squishy clay into tiny round balls.

As already warm cities become more and more vulnerable to extreme heat events, or just the “new normal” of hotter and hotter cities every day, here’s just one more reason why more street trees and other greenery are good for streets & cities. It’s just common sense, really. Cooler, cleaner, smarter.
Images comparing temperature on streets with and without trees. With trees, the temperature ranges from 18 to 26°C. Without trees it ranges from 36 to 50°C. #UrbanHeat
