Thank you for the article blogs.sussex.ac.uk/snapshotsofe... which provided perspective on ‘History Reclaimed’; as its positioning in political discourse was not mentioned in www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... Explainer: What is behind South Africa's anti-immigrant protests?
Protesters have told all undocumented foreigners to leave South Africa by Tuesday, ahead of anti-immigrant rallies that many fear will turn violent.

This thoughtful article is an antidote to the extreme hype surrounding current "AI". Even when a tech bro like Elon Musk talks about the dangers, they're hyping it as being capable of thought, of understanding, which is not currently true. The way we're lapping it up though, that is worrying.

Excellent point. Replacing public servants with AI is like importing your public service from the US. You spend less money into the domestic economy and shovel more NZ financial assets into offshore ownership.
Who are we paying?
Almost all the serious AI in the world is built by a handful of American companies. The huge computer systems that run it are owned by an even smaller group of American companies.

So when the government replaces a New Zealand public servant with AI, what really happens is this: money that used to be paid to someone living in Wellington, Lower Hutt or Palmerston North gets paid instead to a tech giant in California or Seattle in the United States. That money leaves the country and does not come back.

Sir Keir Starmer on today's 2 marches in London (far right, and pro-Palestine) on X: “Today the voices of division will be loud.” Donald Trump on Charlottesville 2022 far right march and murdered counter-activist: “There are good people on both sides” A touching exhibition of their shared values.

(barging in with a relatively uninformed opinion:) does it really matter who leads, when the party as a whole has been largely purged of anyone who's not sufficiently on-message with a neoliberal focus on capitalist dogma and a blairite votes-before-values mentality?

This article ignores the elephant in the room: the first past the poll system in British elections. The electorate don't bother to vote for a party that they like, except as a protest vote, unless they perceive it as standing a chance, an inverse bandwagon effect that only applies in some countries.

It's not really the case that patronymics are used in Greece and Cyprus. It's not like in Russia where it's usual to refer to someone by their name along with their father's name. It's only used occasionally in certain official documents.

"Independence" means very different things here in each case; whether the separation of former Yugoslavia into separate nations, the first phase of Greek independence from the then Ottoman Empire, or Turkey becoming a republic; these are completely different and it's misleading to compare them.

At the low end there's likely to be significant under-reporting. At the high end there's a reverse bias: people with major mental health problems may not be able to mantain a demanding high income job. This graph means less than it appears to.

It's because he was within Mordor. It's "explained" shortly after Shelob's lair, when Sam had been wearing the ring to hide from orcs but takes it off just before coming out of the tunnel and entering Mordor, because instinctively he realises that he'll become visible to Sauron in his domain.

Being Anti-Fascist is important but we need to also be aware about Fascism's root causes.
“History shows it clearly,
austerity creates the conditions
in which fascism thrives. When
Gov'ts strip away public services,
weaken safety nets and deepen
inequality, people lose hope
in democracy and turn to
authoritarian strongmen.’”
