I opened my tutorial this afternoon on the colonial expedition — and what it means for geography as a discipline to continue to work with the term “expedition” today — with this very article

So bleak
Two-thirds of universities told the survey they were considering alliances or mergers, while 31 per cent were cutting academic research, up from 14 per cent in 2024. This includes reducing funding for PhD and young researchers, as well as giving academics less time for their own projects.
The survey also found 44 per cent of respondents were cutting courses, up from 24 per cent in 2024, with programmes in modern languages, English literature, history and chemistry badly hit.
The Department for Education said it had
"already taken action to put universities on a firmer financial footing".
"We expect universities to take appropriate decisions to ensure their long-term
sustainability, which could be merging with another institution and more collaboration in the sector, it added

This is the inversion of the old genre that Israeli culture produced. Shooting and crying offered the Israeli subject advance forgive-ness, as long as the Israeli could cry for the crimes that "Arabs" made them do. NAZA's confessors claim little in this specific form.
What comes out in their confessions is a de-pendency, the ordinary brush with the drug of the divine, and then its withdrawal when the service ends and the machine releases the
"engineer" or the intelligence officer back to the cafés of bustling Tel Aviv. If there is mourning, it is for this loss of power.

Alaa Alqaisi translating under the Gaza sky
Anne Carson's works often explore fragmentation in terms of language, time, and humanity. Her poetry lingers in places where meaning breaks down, leaving silence to take over. This Arabic text felt as if it were a response to her silences, refusing to let the faceless go unnamed; it resisted erasure and insisted on bearing witness. But translating it into English, the language that leans toward abstraction, was a delicate task. Arabic carries its weight differently; it's rooted in rhythm, layered in meaning, and resistant to facelessness. English, with its grammatical economy, can smooth over the jagged edges of Arabic's emotional density. How does one render the philosophical weight of this meditation on war as a continuum, a thread that binds human history together in blood and ash? These were not linguistic questions; they were moral ones. So I had the responsibility to ensure that the rawness of the original survived the journey into Carson's intellectual universe.

Our field is under threat from state legislatures, university regents boards, and politicians who have sought to curtail or fully dismantle the academic study of gender and sexuality. (Indeed, the extent to which the field of WGS has been best supported in public universities may porta d a particular kind of

Gana on Aaron Bushnell’s political act via Jaspers’s concept of “metaphysical guilt” — the binding of “conscience to conduct” www.parapraxismagazine.com/articles/gaz...
The guilt of having watched, known, and failed to stop mass violence is not a seizure of the moral high ground; it is the subjective register of what Jaspers called metaphysical guilt, and one of the psychic forms through which acknowledgment becomes binding.
At its extreme limit stands Aaron Bushnell, the young American airman who, declaring that he would "no longer be complicit in genocide," set himself on fire in front of the Israeli embassy in
Washington, D.C. His self-immolation stands as a tragic testimony to a metaphysical guilt that refused to remain rhetorical-unbearable proof that the moral self-indictment described here
can bind conduct to conscience. Melancholic
moralism does not guarantee action but it is the disposition from within which action has, again and again, actually proceeded.

As Guardian goes full-scale attack on Green Party, I keep thinking of Gana’s @parapraxismag.bsky.social essay I read yesterday: so many work to transform Gaza into a site of sympathy that demands *no obligation or binding claim* on those who witness www.parapraxismagazine.com/articles/gaz...
This transformation entails a redistribution of sympathy. Palestinian suffering does not disappear; it is absorbed into a broader field of concerns where it no longer commands a binding claim. The result is a geostrategic detachment: Gaza remains visible, its images and voices circulating as before, but the affective ties that might render its demands compelling are loosened. One sees, one hears, and one may even express concern, but without obligation.

What a final paragraph www.parapraxismagazine.com/articles/sto...
To challenge the world itself, to practice anti-Zionism, we cannot, then, begin with Europe’s figures of alterity, or with relational ethics, but rather with the world of Palestinian struggle and its emergent political subject. If anti-Zionism is to become the indictment of colonial modernity that it should be, it must be entirely indifferent to the totems of an incorrigibly imperial “Western civilization” and its contemporary racial regimes; it must begin with the void or “the outside” that is the cosmopolitical world of Palestinian struggle. It’s from this world, which is also a condition of worldlessness—a world with no place in the world—that we might learn what it means to rebel against the intolerability of the world today. It’s from here that we might glean how the child faces a tank with stones in their hand, if only to learn how to speak.
