In 2022, the first systematic review and meta-analysis of the Papageno Effect "showed evidence that exposure to narratives of hope and recovery resulted in a small, but statistically significant reduction in mean suicidal ideation when compared with active controls." #recovery

That's a great point, if there's been any force that made us re-evaluate the positives of humanity, its been AI!

Excellent read, IMO. Covers a lot of ground, from silence, to AI’s sycophancy, to the weight of actual human presence. FWIW, I see my recovery as gaining skills to be fully human with other humans. AI could play a role (?), but those roles could be humans too. #cptsd tinyurl.com/3yr4a2k5

The social taboo around suicide doesn't just silence conversations. It can teach us to silence ourselves – to look away from our own painful thoughts rather than investigate them with compassion & curiosity. Self-silencing shame plays no role in self-compassionate inquiry or recovery. #cptsd

I hear your concern. PTSD & cPTSD have different symptoms and diff. treatments. I choose to read this as pointing to diff. symptom clusters, not “worse life.” All trauma survivors are on the same team. ❤️‍🩹

Work (in education) brought me to Japan for the summer. The mountains were great, the digital detox was nice too. I'm still a work in progress, but I'm proud of my growth in the past few years. Healing is possible. #cptsd

Recovery for survivors often means looking beyond crisis moments to our self-beliefs, many of which are trauma-adaptations & needlessly cruel. Passive suicide ideation is far from "passive" – its state of distress that deserves our attention, compassion, and curiosity. #cptsd #NAMI #recovery
Passive suicidal ideation is so common in trauma survivors that many don't bother to even mention it when they're being assessed— it's just always there.

It becomes like the barely noticeable background music in a TV show.

💯 Most complex trauma survivors have no pre-trauma identity to "return" to - our sense of self developed in tandem with abuse & neglect. Recovery means seeing through a distortion we've always had & building a brand new life. Its so tough. ❤️‍🩹

I hear you. Truly believe we're in the midst of an inter-generational trauma epidemic, wish there was more discussion of that and its impacts across so many other crises: opioid, loneliness/depression, education, &c &c. Appreciate your thoughts 🙏

Agreed. At one point they mention "loneliness epidemic" and the need for positive relationships and I thought they might veer into the struggles of trauma survivors w/o familial support. Missed opportunity. Healing is work, we gotta change old neural networks, so use what's effective.

Trauma recovery asks us to fall in love w/ ourselves-- but not in a superficial or narcissistic sense. It asks us to fall in real love with ourselves-- love based on deep authenticity, visibility, & commitment. The kind of love that is more behavior than feeling. Agape, not eros.

What’s more infuriating to a survivor than someone mistaking privilege for discipline, a safe upbringing for courage, or shaming others as wisdom? Remember, their misunderstanding doesn't erase what we survived, what happened to us mattered. Their privilege doesn't diminish our strength. ❤️‍🩹 #cptsd

One of the cruelties of trauma recovery is realizing that perfection was never going to make our childhoods whole. We were deceived, perhaps for decades - most of recovery is acceptance and grieving. The light: We have a chance to build a life now, based on the values we choose. #cptsd

It's never gonna be fair that trauma recovery requires fixing what other people broke. But unfair isn't the same thing as impossible. We can acknowledge the injustice & we can heal. Every small recovery step forward is a refusal to let others' actions continue programming our lives. ❤️‍🩹 #cptsd

Many recoveries need to learn to harness the f*ck ’ems. We can use anger to set boundaries and protect our recovery values. Its a fuel we can use to consistently turn to healing, so f*ck ’em, we ain't abandoning ourselves. A spite recovery can still be a good recovery. #cptsd

overwhelming and so I can take a "third person" perspective where I help / feel helped. I guess this is "re-parenting," just showing up for myself in my worst memories, and trying to feel like I matter, like I won't abandon myself. For me, this has been so unexpectedly powerful.

As I've discovered what it means to heal, I've definitely become a bit snarky, maybe salty, when it comes to the popular messaging of healing. I also think I'm more protective of survivors; its hard for me to not stand up when folks get trauma or recovery very wrong.

It's very understandable to struggle questioning judgments of so many people. Yet, that's one reason self-compassion is so important. Not because it denies what happened, but because it creates space to question whether those judgments should have any say in the kindness you show yourself.

To me, any thought that healing is beyond our capacity, that it's "too late," or that we're not worth the effort, is just Trauma Brain fooling us; its that insidious. We can't change the past, but we can 100% stop the past from stealing from our present. Sh*ts not fair, but healing work is possible.
