Let books be. Today kicks off #BannedBooksWeek, an annual observation started more than 40 years ago in response to a sudden surge in attempts to censor or remove books in libraries, schools, and bookstores. Sound familiar? Find ways to get involved and spread the word: bit.ly/4yvixbB.
LET BOOKS BE. Various line drawings related to libraries and books, including a hand holding a sign made of an open book that reads "Freed for ALL to Read," a tote bag that reads "Totes Resist" carrying a book, a full book cart with the head and tale of a horse with text that reads "A Wild Ride," and a closeup of two feet standing on a stack of books that say "A Soap Box" on their spines. Text at bottom reads "Protect the freedom to read. Banned Books Week, October 4-10, 2026." American Library Association. ala.org/bbooks

Gather & Write with @autisticrealms.bsky.social Tue 6 Oct, 10 to 11.30am UK Thu 8 Oct, 4 to 5.30pm UK Online via Zoom, open to all globally This week we're exploring apophenia, our human tendency to find meaning in patterns Reserve your space (free or by donation) www.writingthedawn.com/workshops
Word of the Week graphic for Writing the Dawn, set against a close-up photograph of gnarled, knotted tree bark in soft greys, browns and ochres, its twists and hollows hinting at hidden shapes. At the top, a cream banner reads "Apophenia" in large slate-grey letters. Below it, a rounded cream card framed by white quotation marks reads: "Apophenia. /æpəˈfiːniə/, ap-oh-FEE-nee-uh, noun. The tendency to perceive meaningful connections or patterns between things that are unrelated or random. From the German Apophänie, coined by psychiatrist Klaus Conrad in 1958, probably from the Greek apophaínein, to reveal, from phaínein, to make visible. Its cousin, pareidolia, is the face in the bark, the creature in the cloud, the Man in the Moon." Beneath the card is the white Writing the Dawn logo, a crescent moon and star within a sunburst, with the words "Writing the Dawn, Workshops & Coaching". At the bottom, small text reads "Sources: Merriam-Webster: Apophenia".

Word of the Week: Liminal (LIM-in-ul), being at a threshold. 🌫️ Join us at Gather & Write tomorrow, Tue 29 Sept, 10–11am UK, on Zoom: a Carrie Newcomer liminal poem, a gentle prompt & quiet writing time. writingthedawn.com/workshops #NeuroAffirming #AntiRacist #LGBTQIAAffirming #AntiOppressive
Word card for Writing the Dawn. The heading "Liminal" sits above a misty lake with mountains, seen from the end of a wooden jetty. A cream text box reads: "Liminal (adjective) LIM-in-ul. liminality (noun) lim-in-AL-it-ee. Standing at the threshold. A liminal space is the in-between: the grey light before dawn, the tideline between land and sea, mist rising off a loch. To dwell in the liminal means to rest with what is still becoming, without hurrying it to arrive." The Writing the Dawn Workshops & Coaching logo sits below. Small print reads: From Latin līmen, "threshold." After van Gennep (1909) and Turner (1967). Entry by: Helen Edgar (2026).

I have also created an essay plate about metaphoray for Queering Earth, a project I (Helen @autisticrealms.bsky.social ) have been working on with Ryan Boren at @stimpunks.org queering.earth/metaphoray

Metaphoray
A botanist’s word for the walk, a writer’s word for the same walk, and the gap between what a label can hold and what the plant actually was.

New on the Writing the Dawn Substack: Metaphoray, foraging between ways of knowing This week at Gather and Write, we read Kimmerer's "Asters and Goldenrod" and wandered between a botanist's word and a more 'felt' word.... Find out more: substack.com/@writingthed...
A square graphic in soft cream and slate grey, set over a close-up photograph of bright yellow goldenrod flowers growing thickly among deep purple asters, with green leaves between them. Across the top, a cream banner reads "Metaphoray" in large grey letters.

In the centre is a rounded cream text box framed by large white quotation marks. It reads: "Metaphoray (noun, verb) met-uh-FOR-ay. Foraging between ways of knowing. A metaphoray is the walk between a botanist's word and a writer's word for the same plant, and the gap between what a label can hold and what the plant actually is. To metaphoray means to move between scientific naming and storied, relational knowing without letting either one close the other off."

Below the box, over the flowers, is the white Writing the Dawn logo: a crescent moon holding a small star, with rays of light around it, above the words "Writing the Dawn, Workshops and Coaching."

Small white text along the bottom reads: "Word credited to Kimmerer, R. W. (2013). Braiding sweetgrass: Indigenous wisdom, scientific knowledge and the teachings of plants. Milkweed Editions, page 46. Entry by Helen Edgar, queering.earth/metaphoray (2026).

Word of the week: Sonder (SAHN-der), noun. It names the realisation that every stranger passing by is living a life as full and complicated as your own. At Writing the Dawn, each person who joins a workshop brings a whole story with them, and we love hearing them unfold.
Word of the day graphic for Writing the Dawn, showing a crowd of people seen from behind at an outdoor event, warm-lit and slightly blurred. A cream banner across the top reads "Sonder." Below it, text on a soft cream card reads: "Sonder (neologism, noun) [SAHN-der]: the realisation that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own, filled with their own ambitions, friendships, routines, and worries." Beneath the crowd image, a crescent moon and sunburst emblem sits above the words "Writing the Dawn, Workshops & Coaching," with the source credited as Merriam-Webster and Koenig, 2021.

Yesterday I spent time at Wightwick Manor and Gardens and saw the exhibition The Rossettis: Siblings and Spouses. It inspired me to re-read some Christina Rossetti poetry today, and I found a perfect poem for the last day of August about swallows starting their journey south for the winter.
Sunrise-toned quote graphic for Writing the Dawn workshops and coaching, with a sun-and-moon line icon and a swallow in flight silhouetted over a pink and grey sky. Text reads: 'Fly Away, Fly Away Over The Sea.
