Our recently published article in jSEDI has been picked up by @esaearth.esa.int @esa.int ! I think it was a pretty good study, especially because it resulted from a summer internship we hosted jointly between @edinburgh-uni.bsky.social and the BGS (their handle doesn't work for some reason?)

Beneath the Pacific, Earth’s molten core changed direction in 2010—and scientists are still trying to understand why. Using data including ESA’s Swarm and CryoSat missions, researchers traced this unexpected shift, offering new insights into our magnetic field: www.esa.int/Applications...

Comparison of the RMS of GRACE data sets (a), the residual using ISBA-CTRIP (c) and the residual using WGHM 2.2d (d). The histograms of the RMS on all grid points (top), land (middle) and ocean (bottom) are shown in (b). The RMS reductions as a result of the difference between the RMS of GRACE data sets and the residuals derived from ISBA-CTRIP (e) and WGHM 2.2d (f). Blue areas indicate regions where residual RMS is lower than that of GRACE, while red areas indicate where it is higher. Average RMS and RMS_r values over land and ocean for each data set are indicated in the bottom corners of the respective maps.

The extent of Himalayan ranges showing the interplay between topography around intermontane basins, seismicity and population. The top panel shows nine major intermontane basins. Major thrusts across the whole extent are also highlighted which include MFT: Main Frontal Thrust, MBT: Main Boundary Thrust and MCT: Main Central thrust. Dashed lines represent extensional features (normal faults). The fault data is obtained from Giri et al. (2024). The study area is highlighted and elaborated in Fig. 2(a). The middle panel shows the earthquake focal mechanisms, scaled by the size and coloured according to the centroid depth (Wimpenny & Watson 2020). The bottom panel shows the gridded population density data across the entire extent (SEDAC 2017), intermontane basins are highlighted.

You are correct - the atmosphere also has 6-year periods - they co-exist with the ones we see from the core (which we would expect to exist, as per ex. Mound and Buffett 2003). I can recommend this recent review that interprets all these signals holistically. doi.org/10.1007/s10712-024-09874-4

Why is the Earth System Oscillating at a 6-Year Period? - Surveys in Geophysics
A 6-year cycle has long been recognized to influence the Earth’s rotation, the internal magnetic field and motions in the fluid Earth’s core. Recent observations have revealed that a 6-year cycle also...

The jury is still out as to why, but I suspect it arises from the gravitational coupling between the inner core and mantle
100
Frederik Dahl Madsen @fdmadsen.bsky.social · 11/10/2025
After that, the 6 year oscillation is still clear. It is well acknowledged that such a signal exists (see, for example, Holme and de Viron, 2013;Nature, or Rosat and Gillet, 2023;PEPI).

Frederik Dahl Madsen @fdmadsen.bsky.social · 11/10/2025
We remove the tidal contribution from the signal using the IERS reference tides, which do a very good job. We also clean the signal of atmospheric and oceanic contributions to length-of-day.

Frederik Dahl Madsen @fdmadsen.bsky.social · 10/10/2025
You are correct! That is why it’s very important to subtract the zonal tides before we do any analysis ☺️🌍
