There's a common theme here. The good and inspiring words of Scottish Government are not matched by effective actions on the ground. A point made often by fine Scottish institutions such as Audit Scotland, Fraser of Allander, Scottish Fiscal Commission. Why so slow to learn?

Scotland's native wildlife is sorely depleted and at risk from invasive species. I'm hugely grateful to the young team working hard to control mink that are such a threat to biodiversity. But all environment agencies are underfunded and overstretched – and ScotGov merger plans will not help.
