Heads up, since transit Bluesky seems to like reading UK rail books. Badsey-Ellis is publishing next month the first book length treatment of the Docklands Light Railway, the most cost-effective Anglosphere metro project over the last generation. Probably costing about 100 million per km or less.

The response to this type of thing of course should be loudly saying you’re an American and can live where you want in America.

One of the big problems with Penn through running discourse is that half the people involved are actually interested in discussing things and the other half mostly invoke it symbolically to criticize bureaucrats they don't like

The truth of the matter is that most NY natives are extremely provincial and just happened to be born here. I include myself in this assessment.

One thing about New York City political economy I cannot stress enough is that things are always rigged in the favor of the incumbent. If you have recently moved here you are in some ways being taken for a ride to support everyone who was here before you.

This is being made of fun of but Cuban is correct. A triple mandate would require the federal reserve to instruct the Mint to strike 38 separate trillion dollar coins and using the seigniorage pay off the national debt in one fell swoop.

But there's no magical job title that's going to house these employees. They're not qualified for any maintenance roles. Cleaner is a *demotion*. They're afraid of assaults so station agent is unpopular. Tower operator is being nuked by CBTC and ATS. There's nowhere to reallocate these employees.

This week on the blog: Peasants! We are at last putting together and wrapping up our discussion of life for pre-industrial peasants - a category which includes a majority of all humans who have ever lived. How we can model how they lived, worked, loved and died. acoup.blog/2025/10/17/c...

For the 1st time since the mid-20th c, a major urban US transit network is going to be largely destroyed. Philadelphia’s SEPTA must cut 45% of service, starting NEXT MONTH. 45% is not “waste fraud and abuse.” It’s “would you like to keep your heart or your lungs?” wwww.septa.org/fundingcrisis/

Can’t speak to the generational aspect. But the “they’re going to draft us!” type rhetoric fits in the “Ugh tired of living in interesting times!” category of post in that they’re a kind of luxury belief that lets you feel like a put upon victim of things that are really victimizing other people.

Well everyone, the mayoral election is here. We have a choice between a man supported by the working classes of New York City, and a man supported by the wealthy professional class and recent gentrifiers Hopefully the wealthy professionals win and we don’t have 8 years of Andrew Cuomo

There’s a lot of housing people on here who pretend to be by the numbers market guys and it’s always funny when they give the game away by saying stuff like “landlords will not try to bid down brokers wages” and “landlords have been charging hundreds of dollars under market”

To put it another way, there is a nontrivial risk that Mamdani will badly mismanage the city bureaucracy, and a dead certainty that Cuomo will.
