Democracy is measured by what governments do. Adopting a charter or signing a pact costs nothing; defending and promoting democracy and human rights in practice is the test. Declarations are easy in a time of democratic backsliding, and they give cover to those driving it ⚡️

The Green Party of England and Wales adopted a motion that declares Zionism a form of racism. The text draws on the vocabulary of anti-racism, decolonisation, equality and self-determination ⬛️ We analysed that vocabulary against the intention: the motion abuses rights to legitimise antisemitism ⤵️

Last night Flávio Bolsonaro won Brazil's first round, promising to ‘resgatar a democracia’, rescue democracy 🇧🇷 His campaign uses the word democracy to defend his father, jailed for plotting to overturn the 2022 election ⬛️ Here is how the campaign takes over the language of rights ⤵️
Photo taken from above of a large crowd packed into an arcaded stone courtyard in São Paulo, Brazil, at a pro-democracy gathering on 11 August 2022. Hundreds of people stand shoulder to shoulder, filling the courtyard up to the arches. Many hold up phones, and photographers crowd near the front. A white banner across the upper storey reads 'DITADURA NUNCA MAIS', meaning 'Dictatorship never again'. Two more banners hang on the side walls, partly out of frame: one ends with 'JAMAIS ACONTEÇA' ('never happen') and the other begins 'PARA QUE NÃO' ('so that it does not'). In the foreground, on a dark stage, a man in a dark suit reads from a lectern with glass panels. Beside him are a person in a bright yellow jacket and a woman in white. At the time, President Jair Bolsonaro had hinted that he might not respect the result of the October 2022 election.

‘I sleep with all my clothes on.’ That is how a girl protects her privacy in a French juvenile prison ⚡️ Some children there spend 23 hours a day in their cells. France has increased the number of children it detains by 28% in three years. But: children are children!
In France, only three of the six juvenile detention centres are authorised to accommodate girls.

The UN Rapporteur on the occupied territories said Jews were called Muslims on the way to Nazi gas chambers. But ‘Muselmann’ were prisoners starved to near death. She apologised today. In 2022, she regretted a post claiming a Jewish lobby subjugated the US. Worrying pattern ⚡️
Screenshot of a post on X by Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur, from the account @FranceskAlbs, dated 28 September 2026 at 14:20. The post reads: I sincerely apologize. I misread the term 'Muselmann' (Muslim) used in Nazi camps for prisoners at the brink of death, wrongly inferring that the term antisemitism originally meant hatred of all Semitic peoples. In fact it was coined specifically to denote hatred of Jews. The post shows 1.1 million views, 1,300 replies, 1,000 reposts and 4,600 likes.

Russian courts take 10 minutes to send someone to a psychiatric hospital. They approve over 99 per cent. 49 people held in psychiatric hospitals in political cases, most for opposing the war ⚡️ Russia's psychiatrists remain full members of the World Psychiatric Association WPA_Psychiatry #WCP26
A square infographic with a white background, titled Psychiatry as a weapon, with the subtitle A hidden face of Putin's war against Ukraine. It presents seven findings in brown and black. A grid of 64 dots, 49 of them filled, shows that 64 people were sent by courts to forced psychiatric treatment between 2017 and 2025, and that 49 were still locked in hospital at the end of 2025. A ring chart shows that 58% of cases are linked to speaking out against the war. Three bars show the age of those affected: 28 born after 1990, 19 born between 1970 and 1990, and 17 born between 1950 and 1970. A clock icon shows that court hearings last about 10 minutes per case and that 99% of requests are approved, out of up to 20,000 a year. Two icons show a double standard: critics are declared mentally ill, and people who are ill are declared fit for prison. An iceberg illustrates that known cases are the tip, with Memorial and OVD-Info banned, lawyers arrested, and around 48 teenagers in occupied Donetsk reportedly sent to forced treatment with no details known. A globe icon notes that Russian psychiatrists remain full members of the World Psychiatric Association, followed by the question How long? The logos of the Andrei Sakharov Research Center for Democratic Development at Vytautas Magnus University and the Federation Global Initiative on Psychiatry appear at the bottom.
