Of 51 intermediate powers, 18 pair democratic quality with sustained funding of the UN Human Rights Office, whilst 11 democracies fund below the line.
Scatter chart titled Democratic Quality vs. Sustained Investment in Human Rights, showing 51 intermediate powers coloured by UN regional group. Horizontal axis: V-Dem Liberal Democracy Index, five-year mean 2021 to 2025, from 0 to 1. Vertical axis: voluntary contributions to the UN Human Rights Office per billion US dollars of GDP, annual mean 2021 to 2025, log scale. Dashed lines mark the 0.5 democratic threshold and the 500 US dollar funding line. Eighteen states sit above both, led by Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark. Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Japan, Peru, Chile, Romania and Brazil sit above the democratic threshold only. Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates fund above the line with low democracy scores. Eight states made no contribution from 2021 to 2025: Vietnam, Iran, Iraq, Ukraine and Nigeria below the threshold; Argentina, Colombia and South Africa above it. Bubble size shows GDP.

Out now: our Dispatch, Human Rights Hold the World Together 🌍 Against attacks on human rights and the international order by great powers, we set out 7 benchmarks for intermediate powers. Foreword: Oleksandra Matviichuk @avalaina.bsky.social. Afterword: Odette McCarthy @odettemccarthy.bsky.social
Landscape cover on a bright purple background. The title Human Rights Hold the World Together is set in large white type on the upper left, with the subtitle Why Intermediate Powers Must Defend Human Rights within the System the Great Powers Want to Ignore beneath it. On the right half, a lighter purple world map spreads across the image. In front of the map, the silhouette of a person raises a large flag, and a crowd holding placards fills the bottom edge. A white outlined pentagon with the Notes from the Faultline logo sits in the lower left corner.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights began a new term on Monday at the head of an Office that has lost close to one sixth of its posts ⚡️ Our Dispatch 2 to be published later today sets out how to reinforce the protection of human rights in this moment 💪
Square purple infographic on a white background. Title: Human Rights Hold the World Together. Introduction: intermediate powers must lead in defending democracy and human rights to protect multilateralism from great-power assault. Five measures, each beside a purple round icon. One: treat democracy and human rights as a national security interest, write them into national security strategies and fund them as security spending. Two: create a UN Special Rapporteur mandate on democracy. Three: challenge China and Russia's framing of sovereignty, non-interference, development and 'traditional values'. Four: reinforce voluntary UN contributions and launch a pledge of 0.001 per cent of GDP for democracy and human rights. Five: turn the March 2026 declaration of more than ninety states into a standing coalition at the Human Rights Council in March 2027. Footer: full Dispatch title, www.progresschange.org and the purple logo.

Great powers that follow only their perceived interest threaten everyone, and human rights and democracy are most at risk as they trample them ⚡️ Because human rights hold the world together, intermediate powers must stand up 🌍 Tomorrow we publish our 2nd Dispatch #StayTuned
Square infographic in purple on a white background. Title: Human Rights Hold the World Together. Subtitle: five measures for intermediate powers to defend democracy and human rights. Five lines follow, each beside a purple round icon: democracy and human rights as security, with a shield icon; a UN Special Rapporteur on democracy, with a ballot box icon; challenge China and Russia's framing, with a scales icon; the 0.001 per cent of GDP pledge, with a per cent icon; a coalition of the willing from every region, with a globe icon. ‘Each moment of impunity makes the next war more likely, in Europe and beyond’ writes @avalaina.bsky.social in the foreword to our Dispatch 2. Her diagnosis: ‘We live in an age of great power self-interest’. The recent declarations and actions of President Trump bear this out ⚡️

‘I sleep with all my clothes on.’ That is how a girl protects her privacy in a French juvenile prison ⚡️ Some children there spend 23 hours a day in their cells. France has increased the number of children it detains by 28% in three years. But: children are children!
In France, only three of the six juvenile detention centres are authorised to accommodate girls.
Photographer Alexandre Bagdassarian spent eight months following the daily lives of children in a prison system criticised for the long time spent in cells.

The UN Rapporteur on the occupied territories said Jews were called Muslims on the way to Nazi gas chambers. But ‘Muselmann’ were prisoners starved to near death. She apologised today. In 2022, she regretted a post claiming a Jewish lobby subjugated the US. Worrying pattern ⚡️
Screenshot of a post on X by Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur, from the account @FranceskAlbs, dated 28 September 2026 at 14:20. The post reads: I sincerely apologize. I misread the term 'Muselmann' (Muslim) used in Nazi camps for prisoners at the brink of death, wrongly inferring that the term antisemitism originally meant hatred of all Semitic peoples. In fact it was coined specifically to denote hatred of Jews. The post shows 1.1 million views, 1,300 replies, 1,000 reposts and 4,600 likes.

Russian courts take 10 minutes to send someone to a psychiatric hospital. They approve over 99 per cent. 49 people held in psychiatric hospitals in political cases, most for opposing the war ⚡️ Russia's psychiatrists remain full members of the World Psychiatric Association WPA_Psychiatry #WCP26
A square infographic with a white background, titled Psychiatry as a weapon, with the subtitle A hidden face of Putin's war against Ukraine. It presents seven findings in brown and black. A grid of 64 dots, 49 of them filled, shows that 64 people were sent by courts to forced psychiatric treatment between 2017 and 2025, and that 49 were still locked in hospital at the end of 2025. A ring chart shows that 58% of cases are linked to speaking out against the war. Three bars show the age of those affected: 28 born after 1990, 19 born between 1970 and 1990, and 17 born between 1950 and 1970. A clock icon shows that court hearings last about 10 minutes per case and that 99% of requests are approved, out of up to 20,000 a year. Two icons show a double standard: critics are declared mentally ill, and people who are ill are declared fit for prison. An iceberg illustrates that known cases are the tip, with Memorial and OVD-Info banned, lawyers arrested, and around 48 teenagers in occupied Donetsk reportedly sent to forced treatment with no details known. A globe icon notes that Russian psychiatrists remain full members of the World Psychiatric Association, followed by the question How long? The logos of the Andrei Sakharov Research Center for Democratic Development at Vytautas Magnus University and the Federation Global Initiative on Psychiatry appear at the bottom.

Sudanese women and girls falling prey to sexual exploitation in Egypt ⚡️ Trying to escape war and gender-based violence in Sudan, female refugees in Egypt are struggling to pay for food, medical care, rent. Egypt doesn't help them, dismantling of USAID, defunding of UNHCR left them without resources
A digital illustration set against a deep purple and golden background depicts a surreal moment of surveillance and loss of identity. On the left, a translucent silhouette of a person stands in a warm, golden-lit doorway. In the centre and right of the composition, a large abstract figure dominates the frame, its body rendered entirely in geometric patterns—squares, dots, lines, and chevron marks in shades of purple and gold—suggesting data, information, or digital systems. The figure's head is turned in profile, but where the face should be, there is only a hollow void: a large, empty oval tunnel. One hand clutches a folded document. To the far right, another shadowy figure observes in the darkness. The composition conveys themes of digital monitoring, dehumanisation through data systems, and the erasure of individual identity beneath layers of surveillance and algorithmic reduction.

Russia's event is about to end in Kazan. 22000 participants, dozens of countries, 130 agreements 🧐 Gender balance? Barely a woman visible 🙋‍♀️ Independent media? Nowhere to be found 🤐 Russia's intent? Courting Africa 🌍 ➡️ It signals how Putin is winning from Trump's foreign policies.
Formal group photograph from the Annual Meeting of the Strategic Vision Group "Russia–Islamic World" at Kazan Forum 2026, showing approximately 75 officials and dignitaries from multiple countries standing on a stage. Participants wear business suits, traditional Islamic dress in beige and brown tones, and official attire. The backdrop displays Kazan Forum 2026 branding and text in Russian and Arabic. Professional stage lighting and formal setting indicate a high-level diplomatic meeting. The group is significantly male-dominated, with approximately 6–8 women among the roughly 75 participants visible.
