I finished 'Of Mice and Men'. I need a palate cleanser of frothy, happy reads to wash the bleakness away. Maybe the Game changer series will fix me.

Eldest kid is reading 'Of Mice and Men' for school so I thought I'd finally read it after CliffNotesing it for most of my life. Fuck. I hate it. It's not just Grave of the Fireflies depressing - which I always sensed - it's got American Psycho levels of misogyny baked in. I hate it so much.

Here's a regular white guy (literally "Chad") not a protester. because, "It seemed pointless, or just a way for people to expiate their sense of guilt." Chad witnessed something shattering. And, that all changed in a moment. Excellent article!
One of those latecomers was a 46-year-old documentary filmmaker named Chad Knutson. On the morning after Good was killed, he was at home with his two hound dogs, watching a live feed from the Whipple Building, where ICE is based, a five-minute drive from his house. A protester had laid a rose on a makeshift memorial to Good. As Knutson watched, an ICE agent took the rose, put it in his lapel, and then mockingly gave it to a female ICE agent. They both laughed.

Knutson told me he had never been a protester. It seemed pointless, or just a way for people to expiate their sense of guilt. But when he saw those ICE agents laughing, something broke inside him.

“I grab my keys, I grab a coat, and drive over,” Knutson told me. “I barely park my car and I’m running out screaming and crying, ‘You stole a fucking flower from a dead woman. Like, are any of you human anymore?

As ever, the letter-writers bring the wisdom. We have a crisis of leadership at so many levels, and you only need to look at theocratic and repressive states to see that harsh, arbitrary rules and punishment do not make a society safe or harmonious.

When asked about her cartoon and the Sydney Morning Herald's decision to apologise on her behalf, Ms Wilcox sent an abusive email.
"Why in God's name do you think I would answer the questions of Murdoch's petty little propaganda operation, to give them more fuel for their campaign of hatred?" she said.
"The irony of me having to answer to charges of hatred when your grubby outfit gives not one shit about what you do to people you target.

For Renee Nicole Good Killed by I.C.E. on January 7, 2026 — Amanda Gorman #poetry #notmine
They say she is no more,
That there her absence roars,
Blood-blown like a rose.
Iced wheels flinched & froze.
Now, bare riot of candles,
Dark fury of flowers,
Pure howling of hymns.

If for us she arose,
Somewhere, in the pitched deep of our grief, Crouches our power,
The howl where we begin,
Straining upon the edge of the crooked crater
Of the worst of what we've been.

Change is only possible,
& all the greater,
When the labour
& bitter anger of our neighbors
Is moved by the love
& better angels of our nature.

What they call death & void,
We know is breath & voice;
In the end, gorgeously,
Endures our enormity.

You could believe departed to be the dawn
When the blank night has so long stood.
But our bright-fled angels will never be fully gone,
When they forever are so fiercely Good.[The poem is split across two images, but I transcribed it in full in the alt text of the first one]

New Year’s Eve.
New Year's Eve
Omar Sakr

Typically, this is when we wish we were
wise, yet like fools, make plans as certain
and resolute as ants. There is a lesson for us
in how the end is followed fast by the start
of the new: perhaps you should not be
so afraid of death which, like time and rules,
we invented. I was here
before the Big Bang, you know. Trust men
to make the universe's birth an explosion.
I have other names for it, most of them untranslatable: think somewhere
between Always, and Blink, and you
approach the meaning if not the words.
Surely, anything but a bomb is true.
Surely, if this is a real celebration
and not another manic ritual of brutal distraction, we would create a reprieve from burning?
Surely the sky is desperate for silence,
or else the hard and beautiful work of birds?
Once, we could see the stars unaided,
the perfect light of memory, and now
we have only this snap, crackle, pop.
You will not believe me, child, but once
we could see the stars, and it was glorious.

I used to think that smartphones and streaming were a mistake because giving people the illusion of access to everything all of the time would break us irreparably, but this & returns to iPods, DVDs, records, etc prove that people just want to be people, not 24/7 consumers and marketing targets.
Rising awareness of this agenda explains why some of our students are practicing "appstinence," carrying dumbphones, and boycotting brands associated with the PayPal Mafia and other "tech fascists," as contemporary muckrakers like Gil Duran have dubbed them. It also explains why instructors are contributing to repositories of teaching materials "Against AI and embracing "analog pedagogy' in the form of cellphone bans, handwritten in-class essays, xeroxed course packets, paper attendance sheets, and bound gradebooks.

From a poetry collection by Mary Oliver, where after a hundred poems showcasing gentle observations on nature and animals, she hits you with this
OF THE EMPIRE
We will be known as a culture that feared death and adored power, that tried to vanquish insecurity for the few and cared little for the penury of the many. We will be known as a culture that taught and rewarded the amassing of things, that spoke little if at all about the quality of life for people (other people), for dogs, for rivers. All the world, in our eyes, they will say, was a commodity. And they will say that this structure was held together politically, which it was, and they will say also that our politics was no more than an apparatus to accommodate the feelings of the heart, and that the heart, in those days, was small, and hard, and full of meanness.
