Woodland, Glitteringstone near Rothbury, #Northumberland.
Sunlit open woodland. A road runs past a low outcrop of silver coloured sandstone under mature Scots pines. The road has a constructed stone surface. Some bracken is yellowing while there is a heather clad clearing beyond the outcrop. Blue sky.

Looks like rain coming. The distant dark cloud above the normal looking ones on a sunny high pressure day is actually wild fire smoke from NW Canada. Taken at Ross Sands, Northumberland, England. 11th Sept 2026
A dark sky, clouds against high level dark grey hazy "cloud" giving the impression of rain approaching. The foreground is links land, several yellow marram covered old dunes, now far inland with wet green hollows between them. Foreground is sunlit.

I am still (11 years later) unable to grasp how the images of little Alan Kurdi’s body washed up on a beach wasn’t the final word on treating refugees with compassion and dignity. How we are we having attacks on the RNLI for saving HUMAN lives being encouraged by our media. I weep for our world.

A young native woodland, Priesthaugh, Roxburghshire. Contrasts with the neighbouring wet grassland and several hundred square kilometres of Sitka spruce to the east.
A sunlit glen with a cloudy sky. A 600m high hill in the background partly covered in Sitka spruce. There is a logging road on the left below a grass slope. Either side of a burn there is an assortment of 20 year old trees, mostly rowan, birch and willows.

Faia Muir and Brotherstone Hill, #Midlothian. The western reaches of the #Lammermuir Hills yesterday.
Olive coloured grassy hills in partial shadow under a blue with a few clouds sky. Simple image just steppe like grass with contour detail: a hill in the background and shallow vally curving mid distance to the left.

A scenic slag heap, #Røros, #Trondelag, #Norway. #Copper
Sunlit. A fast flowing river passes a steep loose scree slope on its right. The rocks are grey and red and actually waste from copper smelting. A large wooden building is atop the slag pile and beyond am ornate white church tower with a clock. Downstream is a bridge and a town of wooden buildings. The sky is blue, flecked with cirrus clouds. So much hype over a partial eclipse. I noticed the BBC is still forgetting that the last one bigger than this here was in 2003 when the newly risen Sun was a ring. Sadly the moon was too far away to fully cover the Sun and we had an annular eclipse in Northern Scotland.

Shropshire in 2025. This year is no longer exceptional and much of Scotland looked like this then too.
Grassland with a track leading towards a moorland hill. There is a fence on the right and a pair of trees contrasting with the pale yellow grass. Everywhere looks burnt off - there is no greenery. It is sunny.

Spent last night on the edge of this reed bed on the Solway Firth. Lots of bird sounds, and watching the curlew commute with the tides was fun. I could hear dogs barking in England.
Coastal reedbed under a cloudy sky. Beyond the reeds is an inlet of the sea with land beyond. There was once a railway bridge near here across the sea to England.
