The kidney research community is letting down patients by failing to collaborate enough. Discuss. | Kidney Research UK | 33 comments
The kidney research community needs to change. We're all passionate experts. We care deeply. But we're not seeing the progress that kidney patients need. To be blunt, we need to do more, and faster....

As explained in my accompanying Science behind the Study, the science has come full circle as our earliest insights into the role of the hypothalamus in weight regulation came from patients with these conditions. (3/5) www.nejm.org/doi/full/10....

Using this atlas, we mapped endocrine feedback loops, identified unexpected hormone production in rare cell types, explored the endocrine function of adipose tissue in health and obesity, and mapped genes that cause rare endocrine and metabolic disease. (5/7)

In parallel, we curated a comprehensive database of human hormones and receptors, and developed a tool (‘hormone2cell’) which predicts hormone production and action across the body at single-cell resolution. (4/7)

We leveraged single-cell RNA sequencing, a technology that profiles the expression of every gene in the genome across thousands of individual cells simultaneously. Integrating single-cell RNA sequencing data from 47 human tissues, we built a gene expression atlas of 14 million human cells. (3/7)

Hormones are chemical messengers secreted into the blood that coordinate fundamental processes including growth, reproduction and metabolism. Disruption of hormone function causes a wide range of common endocrine disorders, including obesity and diabetes. (2/7)
