Smart Growth America graphic titled “Tell Congress to prioritize safety and end the pedestrian safety crisis.”

The text below it reads:
"Despite thousands of preventable deaths each year, our streets are still dangerous by design. A staggering total of 39,254 people died on our roads in 2024, including 7,080 people struck and killed while walking. Each person left behind a family torn apart and a community forever traumatized. Each death was preventable.

While we’ve had a specific federal “safety” program since 1973, the current approach is best understood as spending one dollar on safety improvements while spending the next 50 dollars on other transportation infrastructure that makes the problem worse. Our policymakers' repeated failure to support proven street design countermeasures is why the U.S. faces a pedestrian fatality crisis not seen in any other peer country.

It’s time for Congress to reorient the federal transportation program toward safety. The next surface transportation reauthorization is an opportunity for lawmakers to stop the status quo and finally prioritize safety."

Why is legislation like this needed? As Nadya points out in the Wisconsin State Journal: "The suspension is a formality."
Screenshot of an excerpt from Nadya Rosen's op-ed in the Wisconsin State Journal that reads:

"In 2025, speed was a factor in 182 fatal crashes and 6,285 injuries on Wisconsin roads, according to the state Department of Transportation. Wisconsin has the second-highest share of drivers with a speeding ticket on their record of any state in the country.

And here is what our state does with the drivers who speed the most, the ones convicted repeatedly of extreme speeds: It fines them, suspends their license for a while, then hands the keys back. The suspension is a formality. As many as three-quarters of drivers with suspended licenses keep driving anyway. There is nothing in Wisconsin law between a speeding ticket and a funeral.

Sasha's Bill would change that. Rep. Russell Goodwin, D-Milwaukee, and Sen. Chris Larson, D-Milwaukee, have agreed to introduce it in January. It would require drivers convicted of the most serious repeat speeding offenses to install intelligent speed assistance, or ISA, technology in their vehicles as a condition of getting their license back."

Instead of relying on guidance that places the burden on vulnerable road users, preventing traffic violence requires: - Streets designed to prevent crashes -Safe vehicle design -Safe, enforceable speed limits -Transportation policies that prioritize human life

Your regular reminder that crashes ≠ accidents. We owe it to the victims of traffic violence to acknowledge that their injuries and deaths are the result of a transportation system that tolerates dozens of serious crashes each day.
Three news headlines describe deadly or serious traffic crashes using the word "accident" in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; Plano, Texas; and Mobile, Alabama.
