Great article explaining how centralizing power in the presidency does real damage to American society -- in this case, by threatening the future of scientific research.
Atlantic text: Elias Zerhouni, the National Institutes of Health director under President George W. Bush, earlier this year described what’s at stake. “When I was at NIH, it never occurred to me that I could say we’re not paying for something that Congress had appropriated money for because it was not in line with my policies,” he said. “But if that power is given to the executive branch to use whenever it wants, then all bets are off.”

Imagine taking a job at a homeless shelter. One job pays $20/hr to cook/serve food. The other job pays $30 to write down what people are eating. Sadly, this analogy is what insurance companies are doing to family medicine and primary care. We get paid more for data than care

I need every single journalist covering vaccine stuff at the FDA to be explicit about this. Thank you @katherinejwu.com. www.theatlantic.com/health/archi... There is a genuine open question regarding the degree of benefit for otherwise healthy kids to get seasonal COVID-19 boosters.
When describing this shift in an article published in The New England Journal of Medicine, as well as in a livestreamed FDA press conference, Prasad and Makary—neither of whom has formal training in infectious disease or vaccinology—focused primarily on the implications for COVID boosters for young, healthy adults. In the past, the U.S. government has seen fit to restrict or pull vaccines only under extraordinary circumstances: major new safety concerns, a better immunization option, eradication of disease. And those decisions have generally come only after political leaders consulted multiple scientific experts in the field, which Prasad and Makary chose not to do through their agency’s typical channels. (The FDA’s panel of independent vaccine experts is scheduled to meet tomorrow.) Rather, political appointees with preexisting opinions on COVID vaccines appear to have enacted policy unilaterally. Prasad and Makary publicly went after COVID boosters. But kids’ first defenses against the virus are likely to be that attack’s collateral damage.
