Updating dplR? Two changes in 1.8.0 can affect old scripts: gaps inside a series are now read as NA, not zero, and detrend() defaults to a spline. Check the NEWS file first. cran.r-project.org/package=dplR

This is so, so well-articulated.
People call this friction "grunt work." Schwartz uses exactly that phrase, and he's right that LLMs can remove it. What he doesn't say, because he already has decades of hard-won intuition and doesn't need the grunt work anymore, is that for someone who doesn't yet have that intuition, the grunt work is the work. The boring parts and the important parts are tangled together in a way that you can't separate in advance. You don't know which afternoon of debugging was the one that taught you something fundamental about your data until three years later, when you're working on a completely different problem and the insight surfaces. Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the space where the problem lives, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes that nobody asked you to make and learning things nobody assigned you to learn.

I had a feeling this was going to happen. Sad news, especially given the poor state of sea ice after this winter. Looks like we won't be getting any more data for Arctic sea-ice thickness and volume for a while from PIOMAS. See: psc.apl.uw.edu/research/pro...
Screenshot of text that says: "Important Notice (3/24/2026):
NOAA NWS/NCEP has terminated the NCEP/NCAR R1 reanalysis as of March 18th, 2026. NCEP/NCAR R1 has been used as the atmospheric forcing data in the PIOMAS reanalysis . We had not been aware of this change in service which was apparently formally announced Feb 13. 2026. This means that we will have to find alternatives and generate a replacement. It will take considerable effort and time to update data streams, re-calibrate the model and generate updated time series. We don’t yet have a good sense if that’s possible with available funds and if so, when we will be able to resume production of a new PIOMAS time series. While a replacement of the NCAR/NCEP R1 as the forcing product makes ultimate sense, we would have wished for a longer time period to facilitate the transition. We are sorry what this means to our many users. PIOMAS has been in production since March 2010 and we rarely missed updates by more than a couple of weeks (except for government shutdowns). This will be longer. Check back here for updates! "

I agree. This event has been meteorologically astonishing, and its impacts will be felt long after it ends in terms of record low snowpack, sharply increased wildfire risk, and extreme low watershed runoff/streamflow into summer and beyond.

Our maps capture fine-scale spatial patterns that previous coarse-resolution maps missed—like shrub thickets in riparian zones, biomass loss from permafrost thaw slumps, or long-term fire recovery.

Key findings: • Arctic tundra holds ~3.7 Pg of aboveground plant biomass • ~72% of that is woody • Biomass and woody dominance both increase with growing season warmth (thawing degree days) • Oro Arctic zones hold the most biomass per area

Andy Bunn @fakeandybunn.bsky.social · 02/04/2025
We modeled both total plant biomass (g/m²) and woody dominance (what % of biomass is shrubs or trees). These are crucial variables for ecosystem monitoring, carbon modeling, and climate feedbacks.

So in this paper, we used: ✅ 636 field sites of plant biomass data ✅ Landsat satellite imagery (1984–2023) ✅ A new post-hoc topographic correction ✅ Machine learning (random forest + uncertainty modeling) …to produce high-resolution biomass maps for 2020.

Andy Bunn @fakeandybunn.bsky.social · 02/04/2025
But we haven’t had a detailed, Arctic-wide map of how much plant biomass is out there—or how much of it is woody. Coarser maps (8 km, 300 m) missed key local variation.

The Arctic is warming faster than anywhere else on Earth, and tundra ecosystems are changing fast in response. Shrubs are expanding. Soils are thawing. Permafrost is vulnerable. Wildlife and human land use are shifting.
