Was Jesus transactional when providing aid? Did he say, do X, and I'll feed you? I was going to volunteer with a local Christian organization that does a lot of good for the community; however, they require that their clients first endure some sort of sermon or talk. WWJD? Not that.

I saw The Met's streamed production of the opera, "Andrea Chénier," at a movie theatre today. I liked it, teared up at the end. I realized that, unlike television or movies, opera is not plot driven. The essential part of an opera is emotion—how well the performers express the human condition.

I just attended a live performance of The Met's "La Bohème," my 1st opera, from the comfort of my local Cinemark theatre. I enjoyed *watching* an opera more than just listening to one. I'm seeing Austin Opera's production in May, and I'm considering attending a Met performance in person next season.

I recently bought this lawn chair because it's beautiful and iconic. It's only temporarily here in my office; I don't dare sit in it because the aluminum frame would scratch up the soft pine floor in a heartbeat. OTOH, Emma can do whatever she wants.
An orange tabby looking at the camera, laying on the seat of a green-and-white-woven lawn chair with green plastic arms and aluminum frame. The chair is sitting in a grey-walled room on a pine floor. Corners of windows can be seen on the walls.

There is an ochre-colored three-tiered fountain in the middle of the photo. An irregular-stone walkway surrounds it in a circle. There is lush greenery behind it, including palm trees. You can see parts of a grand house among the trees. There is a salmon-topped kiosk or small pagoda to the left of the fountain. There is a blue sky in the upper left.

Yellow wrought-iron (?) vertical bars on a window that are sculpted into curlicues (S-shaped) with a horizontal bar presumably for stabilization. The photo is shot at almost a 45-degree angle, leaning to the left. In the background, through the bars, you can see green bushes and trees and brown ground cover in lower right. On the left, also through the bars are windows and a roof.

In Canada, the Indian Act prohibited powwows and other cultural expressions between 1876 and 1951. Indigenous communities kept their traditions alive in secret, and modern powwows are a powerful symbol of their survival and resistance.
The Indian Act in Canada, enacted in 1876, imposed severe restrictions on Indigenous cultural practices, including banning powwows, the Sun Dance, and other ceremonies deemed "undesirable" by the government. These prohibitions, enforced until amendments in 1951, were part of a broader assimilative agenda, alongside policies like residential schools. Despite this, Indigenous communities preserved their traditions through clandestine gatherings, passing down songs, dances, and ceremonies in secret. Modern powwows, vibrant celebrations of culture, spirituality, and community, stand as a testament to Indigenous resilience and resistance against cultural erasure. They blend traditional elements—like drumming, regalia, and dances such as the Fancy Dance or Jingle Dress—with contemporary expressions, showcasing both survival and adaptation.

Due to foot pain, I've been walking really slowly in public. It's freeing in that I don't have to match societal norms or the pace of people around me. I keep off to the side, so I don't impede anyone. It's almost like a walking meditation. Try it! Don't care what people think.

The side of a pink/coral apartment/condo with Spanish red-tile roof. There are four windows near each corner of the side of the building with an exterior air-conditioning unit just inboard of each window. There are two slightly darker stripes further inboard of the A/C units and the street numbers, 4412, vertically to the right of the left stripe. There is a carport attached to the right side of the building. The sky is a brilliant blue. There are a couple of palm trees in front of the building on the left and green/brown grass in frotn of the building.

I took this photo in North Texas in the 1970s, probably with a Petri SLR.
A field of green grass occupies almost half of the bottom of the photo. In the middle is a large green tree and green brush that has apparently grown around an old red crane whose boom extends out of the greenery at a 45-degree angle. A black tire hangs from the end of the boom, but it touches the ground so it might have been a swing long ago. Off to the right in the distance are mobile homes for sale with a sign that says, "A 1." There are more green trees at the left of the photo and more, indistinct structures among them.

An ad that says at the top, "Welcome to Austin." Under that it says, "Michelob Ultra" and "All-star Austin." The remaining 3/4 of the image is distorted, presumably due to a hardware glitch.

Here's a lovely performance of Puccini's "Crisantemi." The suspended 2nd in the 1 3 2 motif reflects the unfinished, incomplete life of the person it memorializes, Amadeo di Savoia, Duke of Aosta. The double amen at the end says, it's over--he is, alas, dead. www.youtube.com/watch?v=32jL...

I dug up a large rosemary bush on our property eight years ago, and this little critter crawled out (sorry about the photo's potato quality). It must have been living in there. I see a tarantula every few years. They're chill, so I let 'em be. Scorpions, on the other hand...
Large spider, although there is no reference or context for size. Occupies most of the middle of photo. Its body and legs have brown hair; its legs are slightly blue. It's crawling over a piece of wood with various sticks and small oak leaves on the ground.

The best Thai basil dish with tofu I ever had was at Grata Thai Cuisine at 1099 1st Ave in Manhattan. It was peppery which could have some from the basil, but I think it was from black pepper. I meant to come back during my visit but never did. Maybe someday.

The P. Terry's Burger Stand chain of restaurants around Austin uses Googie architecture, which I love. Here is the ceiling of one from inside the restaurant in Lakeway, Texas.
From inside a building, looking up at the tan, wooden ceiling which extends outside. It angles maybe 12 degrees from the horizontal. Lower on the right; higher on the left. There are two large round skylights that appear oval in the photo due to the angle. You can see a little sky in the one nearer the viewer, near the top of the photo. The openings of both are painted white. In the bottom third of the photo, you can see blue cloudy sky with grass at the very bottom, a few trees, and a long low building stretching across the photo. just a liver, really, in the photo.
