There are many colorblind-friendly, perceptually uniform colormaps (e.g., cmocean, @fabiocrameri.ch), yet many papers at @agu.org still use rainbow variants. Not just aesthetics — they can create artificial structures (see plot). Better options exist.

Plots of the viscosity for (a) a model with a viscosity increase at 1,000 km depth, separate from the phase change at 660 km depth (b) versus slab tip flattening for an oceanic overriding plate, highlighting the combined influence of the continent and the viscosity structure of the mantle in the dynamics of deep slabs.

Nice to hear, Andrew. 😇 ⚠️ Two points to clarify: 1) Turbo is NOT perceptually even (don’t know why people think it is – research.google/blog/turbo-a...) 2) Our preference for certain colours cannot trump the argument for scientific accuracy or inclusivity (Not sure why people think it does).

Don't use red and green data lines/surfaces in the same panel please #chemsky. It can be difficult for some colorblind readers to differentiate them. I've accepted (in principle) 2 papers today, and both sets of authors were asked to remove red/green colour contrasts www.nature.com/articles/d41...
