🌊 NEW STUDY: The 2023-2024 El Niño triggered the largest sea level surge EVER recorded across Africa's oceans, surpassing even the powerful 1997-1998 event. Our new paper in @CommsEarth explains why this happened and what it means. 🧵 Thread below

"Sea-level rise poses a significant threat to Africa’s vital coastal ecosystems & the livelihoods of its growing populations... The rate of rise has accelerated markedly to 4.34 mm/yr since 2010, over 4 times the 1990s rate... this uneven rise intensifies risks for over 50 million coastal residents"

Monthly sea level for Africa from 1993-2023. Annual means are shown in red. Sea-level rise accelerated over the 31-year period, with the rate during the final 11 years more than four times higher than the rate during the initial decade. Image courtesy of Ghomsi et al. (2025).

Thank you for featuring our study! Africa is now more than ever at the forefront of cumulative extremes, which have been amplified by recent El Niño events. 📈

🚨 Our new paper is out! First study focusing on African sea level rise from 1993 to present 🌊🌍 Sea levels accelerated 4.5× since the 1990s, from 0.96 to 4.34 mm/yr. 2023 broke records across 40% of African waters. Thread ⬇️ 📖 doi.org/10.1038/s43247-025-02965-z
