New research led by Spark estimates warming-induced emissions from permafrost thaw, wildfires, and other sources could amplify global warming by approximately 20–30% & add an estimated 0.2–0.4°C of warming this century (with significant uncertainty).

Big story in this week’s @economist.com about a major risk we are also increasingly focused on: Earth is reflecting less sunlight back into space, rapidly increasing Earth’s Energy Imbalance and making the world hotter.

📣 Methane causes ~30% of global warming, & despite emissions reductions, a major gap will remain by 2050. #BiologicalMethaneRemoval is one of the most promising ways to close that gap. With @sparkclimate.bsky.social, we convened 30 experts, resulting in 22 problem statements. 🔗 bit.ly/3PdO1RL

The Endangerment Finding—a key pillar of U.S. climate policy—is on the chopping block. New DOE emails show the report used to justify repeal was deeply flawed and shaped to support a predetermined outcome. New piece by Spark's Phil Duffy for @ucs.org: blog.ucs.org/science-blog...

Internal DOE Documents Confirm Climate Report Was Created to Justify Administration Policy
Facts are supposed to shape policy—not the other way around. That key principle is being undermined as the Trump administration seeks to reverse an important pillar of U.S. climate policy. In its p...

EPA’s revised its webpage on climate change to downplay the role of human emissions. That risks giving the public an incomplete and misleading picture of the science. At Spark, we believe good science = better decisions.

It’s time to unlock faster solutions for a key frontier in methane action: livestock. Livestock produce more methane than oil and gas, coal, or waste. But unlike most other sectors, we don’t have widely deployable technical solutions to reduce most livestock emissions yet.

A lil scoop: @sparkclimate.bsky.social is launching a model intercomparison project to determine how tropical wetlands, thawing permafrost & other warming-driven emissions will accelerate climate change—and subtract from the carbon budget. Researchers at EDF, Woodwell, Stanford will contribute.

The EPA wants to overturn its own previous finding—which was based on overwhelming scientific evidence—that greenhouse gases harm public health and welfare. A lot is at stake with this decision for people and the planet, and repealing it would fly in the face of truth.

This is a critical climate moment—and the stakes are rising fast. Global warming broke 1.5°C last year, greenhouse gas emissions remain at record highs, and the impacts of climate change are prominent today and getting worse. Philanthropy has a crucial, and growing, role to play.

What this climate moment needs from philanthropy — Spark Climate Solutions
We need both ambition and innovation to turn from the path we are on toward a safer, stable climate future. Philanthropy must step in and play a larger catalytic role on both fronts.
