In this new study, @geoniette.bsky.social has done a fabulous job with this work on the dynamics of deep, sinking plate tectonic slabs. 🌍💡 Have a read here: agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...
Plots of the viscosity for (a) a model with a viscosity increase at 1,000 km depth, separate from the phase change at 660 km depth (b) versus slab tip flattening for an oceanic overriding plate, highlighting the combined influence of the continent and the viscosity structure of the mantle in the dynamics of deep slabs.

And here‘s the perceptually uniform, colour-blind friendly colour gradient ‚acton‘ to go along with it! Available from www.fabiocrameri.ch/colourmaps Never stop! 🤩🩷 🐡 📊 #UseBatlow

Scales (such as a colour bar) that are meant to represent one dimension of a data set can’t be used to highlight data ranges. Instead, use superposed contour lines instead if you must know the individual values clearly on a map. Here’s a crude example of how this map could be shown. 📊 #UseBatlow
Unintuitive data visualisation with random changes between neighbouring data values introducing artificial gradients to the data visualisation.Intuitive and scientific data visualisation with equal changes between neighbouring data values representing the data set accurately (and accessibly) as a whole to the non-expert audience.

I got the chance to present about accurate and accessible #scientific #colour use in a room full of physicists! Thanks, Santa Pile, Andreas Schell (see images), and @oepg_at for the invitation and organisation! 🫶📊

❔What is the most-used methodology in science? ❔What is the least-widely taught one? ❕One answer only: #ScientificGraphicDesign 📊. Here is me teaching it all the way up at UNISvalbard with Grace Shephard, s-ink.org & support of iEarth Norway. ❤️ #OneStepAtATime #Academia
