Structural Iridescence | Begonia 'Dark side of the moon' Plants that shimmer blue in dark conditions aren't using pigments, they're bending physics. Called structural Iridescence, their leaves have tiny microscopic layers that bounce blue light to help the photosynthesise in deep shade #Garden 🌱

This spring, we finally started to build our large *geothermal* greenhouse. It's 7x12x4,20m with wooden gothic arches. The goal is to keep it frost-free in our 7b climate, allowing us to massively expand the growing season + to plant stuff like citrus, passion fruit & other hardy subtropicals 🌱 1/

Buddleja davidii is often called “invasive.” It certainly colonizes disturbed areas (like RR lines), but I’ve never seen it invade intact ecosystems. Weedy on ecosystem edges? Definitely! Invasive? I’m not convinced. 📷: Bluebell Railway nigelmenzies CCBYNCND2 #Scrophulariaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

What’s flowering at the Fuchsietum? The tiny Pacific starflower, Lysimachia latifolia. It’s a creeping wildflower native from N. Calif. to Yukon. Supposedly prefers deep, light soil rich in organic matter and leaf mould. Can’t say my clay qualifies so it must be adaptable. Doing more than OK for me.
