you’re not letting us work three days a week, you’re all going to start competing for who has the most trillions of dollars instead of billions of dollars while spending significant portions of it to make sure that any taxes that could be used to that end never come to pass

I think it's key to understanding their worldview that they imagine a world not *without* immigrants, but one in which immigrants' inferiority is permanently asserted and they become a subservient caste. All these people worship the Gulf States.

I wish just one NATO leader (or all of them) would say, "This is unacceptable. The US president has lost his mind. America come get your boy. He's broken and needs to be under a doctor's care back home." I wish someone would tell the damn truth about what's happening.

my theory is that it proves that the US just isn't a football nation at heart - sure you can be happy with a bit of shithousery, or with one of your players getting away with something they shouldn't have got away with, but something like *this* is just on a different level entirely

This is what makes it art: '(...) the publisher posted a blank white page with the cryptic phrase, “This article has been withdrawn due to article violation.” Springer Nature is nevertheless still selling the empty PDF for $39.95.' www.science.org/content/arti...

Why have papers by one of history’s most famous physicists been retracted?
Springer Nature has removed two studies by Max Planck. A bot may be to blame

This is so, so well-articulated.
People call this friction "grunt work." Schwartz uses exactly that phrase, and he's right that LLMs can remove it. What he doesn't say, because he already has decades of hard-won intuition and doesn't need the grunt work anymore, is that for someone who doesn't yet have that intuition, the grunt work is the work. The boring parts and the important parts are tangled together in a way that you can't separate in advance. You don't know which afternoon of debugging was the one that taught you something fundamental about your data until three years later, when you're working on a completely different problem and the insight surfaces. Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the space where the problem lives, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes that nobody asked you to make and learning things nobody assigned you to learn.

i feel like the viral bus thread resonates because at every step of the way you're like "ok surely this will be resolved shortly, any second now," which seems like what all the passengers are also thinking. then the fact that the situation doesn't resolve and the bus just keeps going is an Allegory

The embarrassing capitulation of the EU on trade and energy in the summer, followed by the humiliating U-turn of the EU over tech regulation in the autumn didn't even buy us goodwill from Trump to make it to the spring. A lesson for appeasers.

Wow, that really is a picture for our times - a woman evidently in one of the care-giving professions standing off - if even for a moment seven over-armed paramilitary thugs who are trying to invade her house.

Planetary friends: The LPSC 2026 abstract deadline is coming up this Tuesday. I will not attend because of LPI's shit anti-DEI policy, but I'm curious as to how many people *will* participate this year. If you have submitted an abstract and are willing to share its submission number, please DM me.

The push to break up tech giants keeps running into one obstacle: By the time the government's cases reach trial, the market has changed. Yet the same companies remain on top. We wrote about how Big Tech keeps beating the allegations — by getting even bigger. www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2...

The government failed to break up Meta. It’s becoming a pattern.
Silicon Valley’s ever-changing landscape is blunting the movement to rein in its power.

As another weekend of Barclay’s Premier League football gets underway, and a massacre is still unfolding in El Fasher, we cannot lose sight of the fact that the same people who are funding the slaughter in Sudan also own Manchester City Football Club. It is a national disgrace.

If you really want a Star Trek future, it’s not just going to space in cool machines. It’s building a society with respect for all life, sentient & otherwise, applying science wisely, and pursuing principles of justice, fairness & reason. Let’s build that and ride it to the stars.

This comment on r/fednews really stood out to me. Trump and Musk want people to think they're firing do-nothing "bureaucrats," but they're really getting rid of people dedicated to serving this country and keeping it operational. I hope these stories get told.
I lost my job. USDA Forest Service.

My probation was up next week.

I did everything right. I took a GS-7 role with a master’s degree just to get my foot in the door. I spent years doing seasonal fieldwork for low pay, working in remote places, gaining experience, and building skills, just for a chance at a permanent position. I was about to be a GS-9. I wrote NEPA reports. I conducted field surveys. I worked fire support. I dedicated myself to this work because I believed in it.

Public lands don’t manage themselves. The wildlife, watersheds, and forests we protect don’t just stay protected without people on the ground making it happen. My coworkers and I took on that responsibility, often in places most people never think about but that matter more than they know.

And now? Just like that, I’m out.

Edit: I’ve consistently supported progressive policies and have voted Democrat in every national and local election since I was 18. I do appreciate folks asking, I have some coworker having a serious 'leopards ate my face' moment right now.
