So, about a month ago I went to Twede's cafe and took some polaroids. It's the IRL cafe that was used as the location for the RR diner in Twin Peaks. #polaroid #photography

Hot take: but I think copyright duration should be something around 56 years. This is what the copyright duration was after the 1909 copyright act.

If you would like; you can also get the ebook at a website I am linking to! I would much prefer you buy it on my itch.io page, but I know for some folks it's just much easier to buy on Amazon, and now you can. The physical edition should probably be on Amazon as well relatively soon

it’s wild that the heritage foundation wrote in text that the assault on trans woman particularly in sports is their first step in their efforts to completely abolish all Title IX protections and liberals still don’t believe it’s about more than trans women in sports

I went somewhere neat on Friday. They have dam nfine coffee, the pancake I had was yummy, and the cherry pie was great. Also, I took a few Polaroids of their sign and also Snoqualmie Falls which is nearby. I'm a big fan of Twin Peaks, so I had a fun time.

not only does this piece not cite a single fact re: the many potential benefits of kratom, there is no indication that the author has ever spoken to someone who has as much as tried it. And certainly no perspective from the many people who are living pain and drug free because of it.

~500 people OD on acetaminophen every year, just for some context. More than 5 million Americans have tried kratom, and death with responsible use of botanicals (vs synthetics) is EXTREMELY rare. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK441...

One more thing: the author acknowledges that the AKA is only advocating for natural kratom & supports banning synthetics, but wantonly conflates the two. She then tries to suggest that McCurdy knows that natural kratom may be fatal. Click through to learn that this is in possibly 36 cases. 36.

Anyway, I didn't know who Christopher McCurdy was before I read this and I'm not defending him here. I have been interested in kratom's potential for many years and happen to know a lot about it; obviously I have a bias here. But this is a really strange choice of inaugural kratom pieces for PP

Ricaurte is responsible for many ppl believing that MDMA will put holes in your brain bc he (and this is 100% true) switched out the MDMA he was testing on monkeys with *pure meth* & had to run the most embarrassing retraction in scientific history when caught pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

the main point appears to be that this researcher has not disclosed industry ties, which is unfortunately fairly common across the world of scientific research as I understand it. I have no problem with keeping this man honest, but I do really have one with how is work is characterized in this

there is a direct analogue here between natural cannabis sativa and the extremely harmful synthetic K2/"spice" which appeared in the vacuum created by the criminalization of marijuana. It's fairly 1:1, except that synthetic kratom products are much worse health.clevelandclinic.org/dangers-of-s...

You'd also never know from this piece that kratom in its natural form has been used by humans in moderation for thousands of years to treat pain, something it is *remarkably* effective at pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

First, the piece essentially handwaves away the *extremely vital* difference between healthy natural kratom and deadly synthetics. The first sentence sets the tone by calling it "a substance that has left a trail of death and addiction around the world" w/o making that distinction at all

this is the first time in my life that I have finished a ProPublica article and had a strong urge to write a comprehensive response to it. Nothing against this reporter or PP generally, but this story with this angle at this time is truly (as the kids say) not it. A few points:

You know that the zeitgeist around kratom is *dire* when ProPublica is carrying the DEA's water! This is the only story PP has ever published on anything relating to kratom, and it is absurdly prohibitionist. We are about to make the same mistake with mitragyna speciosa that we made with cannabis.
