ACTION ALERT 🚨 Right now, the Senate is considering adding language to the transportation reauthorization bill to restrict bike lanes. Tell Congress: funding for bike safety projects MUST continue! Take action: action.bikeleague.org/page/101946/...

Below the image is white text on a black background: "Tell congress: Funding for Bike Safety Projects MUST Continue! bikeleague.org/action-center"Action alert graphic. White text on a black background: "Congress Must Save America's Bike Lanes
Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy erased the data that shows bike lanes reduce crashes and don’t cause congestion. Then he asked Congress to defund all bike lanes — and even remove bike lanes from busy roads.

Now, Congress may be listening: the Senate is considering adding language to the transportation reauthorization bill that would restrict what kinds of roads could have bike lanes on them at all.

We need everyone in Congress to hear us clearly: bike lanes save lives and bicyclists have a right to ride on the roads and get home safely.

Tell your elected representatives: vote NO on any transportation reauthorization bill that would restrict the ability of federal funding to be used on bike safety projects. bikeleague.org/action-center"

A yellow haired sun fly! This hover fly made very loud bee-like buzzing sound too! Looks scary for sure with its stripes, perhaps the reason it was so nonchalant and let me take a photo. #BugSky #invertebrate #pretty #macro #nature

Feeding some animals like local birds in your backyard is mostly OK. Raccoons? I couldn’t find any professional recommend it, all I found is wildlife experts and pest control recommend against it. Wondering if anyone can share more info?

I’d say relatively easy to make, especially if one has experience with fermented foods. The hard part is keeping it warm enough but not too warm and not waiting too long, otherwise the mold will start producing spores, which are fine, but bitter and not tasty. I’m stop to figure out the best process

I also have the impression that in the US there is this perception that public transit is for “poor people” and it’s unsafe and unsanitary, not something to enjoy.

This can lead to sense of ignoring harms done that carry injustice forward in generations. A better approach is to be aware and present the full story.

Evtim G @evtim.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
If we ever want to be better, we must become aware. Often times we pick and choose parts of people, lionize them and create hero stories to inspire and celebrate but inevitably that can be interpreted as celebration of the whole, including the bad parts.

On a business trip to Denver, I was the only one from the team to take bus from the airport and light rail to the hotel and conference center. I was the only passenger in the bus from the airport to downtown. Denver public transit was pretty good! My coworkers didn’t understand.

They are shaggy mane mushrooms, they start white, have loose ring, the stem is slender and hollow and they grow from the soil and are not attached to decaying wood

INaturalist also suggests genius Xeromphalina, I agree with that. Could be a number of species, they all look quite alike. Perhaps cauticinalis or campsnelloides as they look more yellow than orange?

Do you know the species? They look like cabbage parachute (Gymnopus brassicolens).

Evtim G @evtim.bsky.social · 17/05/2026
Just a note of caution: make sure they really are shaggy manes, make sure they are deliquescing and not rotting, shaggy manes uptake heavy metals make sure the site is clean and foraging is permitted. Don’t pick mushrooms unless you are an expert.

A potent neurotransmitter, it is acting as a disorienting/disrupting drug for insects and slugs that try to eat the mushrooms, so that’s more like a defence mechanism. Its effect on humans is accidental.
020
Evtim G @evtim.bsky.social · 17/05/2026
I love them too! Just be careful where you pick them because they readily uptake heavy metals from polluted sites.
010
Evtim G @evtim.bsky.social · 17/05/2026
They look scary and off putting when inky, but still perfectly edible 😄
231
Evtim G @evtim.bsky.social · 17/05/2026
Great question! The toxins typically are not fast acting, and only work through ingestion (can’t get poisoned by touching poisonous mushrooms), so perhaps it’s just accidental incompatibility with certain organisms. Note that the shaggy mane itself is not poisonous even when it turns black.

Shaggy mane mushrooms (coprinus comatus) are still edible when they turn inky. I satay, put them on pizza or if they are too far gone make them into sauce 😋 #fungifriends #fungi #mushrooms #food #nature
