Redundancies/inefficiencies or not, it's funny that via a kind of monopolization meatgrinder, Uber customers are turned into a sanctimonious beneficiary's The Picture of Dara Khosrowshahi.

Uber's CEO says you could see lower ride prices as a result of its layoffs
Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi plans lower ride prices as savings from layoffs and reduced insurance costs are reinvested back into the business.

"The same guy that paid that guy to bone-saw Jamal Khashoggi.." also bought $3.5B of Uber & a seat on its board. Marc Maron scolded comics for taking Saudi cash, yet cashed Uber Eats ad cheques. You can navigate capitalism — and Hong Kong, David Cross — without ensuring a regime gets an ROI.

Was thinking 'coning' autonomous livery vehicles could be revived with life-sized cardboard cutouts of Michael Knight (for example) due to Tesla's visual-only sensors, but it looks like David Hasselhoff would slowly get run over by the time-money imperative.

Ontario cabbies must take the first person who asks, however short the fare. Refusal means a $300 ticket. Uber drivers appear in this video bragging about declining anyone under 4.9 stars - beside taxi iconography they've no claim to. They kept the aesthetic and dropped the duty.

I once had a guy randomly come up to the cab to convince me that ridehailing means taxis aren't long for this world. Instantly, I recalled the woman who'd just been raped who couldn't successfully flag down a car until I drove by with the same identifiers that began that man's performative savvy.

"Wallet-votes always go to the people with the thickest wallets, and statistically, that is not you." Treating shopping as a moral act creates an unhelpful "purity culture". It shames working-class people for buying cheaper goods, shifting the blame from predatory corporations to everyday consumers.

Don't get me wrong. In my opinion, Google Maps is the greatest thing they ever produced, in no small part because it required lots of being physically out in the world to get it right. But just when it was fully ready, it was used to start a base-less global dispatcher monopoly.

The riots weren't "taxi vs. city." Striking fleet drivers first went after independent owner-drivers who acted as strikebreakers - smashed their windows, pulled out their passengers, burned the cabs. They were never the same people. Odets wrote Waiting for Lefty out of that strike. 11/

Kalanick's back, and saying "taxi" like it's one thing. It was never one thing. Fleet owners, fleet drivers, and owner-drivers spent decades at each other's throats - in court, on picket lines, and sometimes with crowbars. /1

Kalanick-the lesh-and-blood one in the hotel hat Tuesday
morning-already brought to his knees, began muttering to his lieuten-
ants, ""This is bad, this is really bad." He fell further forward, writhing
around on the floor. "What is wrong with me?" he yelped.
like None this of made the them executives deeply knew what to do. Seeing Kalanick squirm like this made them deeply uncomfortable.

PUSHING HACK Feature · alt-history techno-thriller · New York City, 1996–2000 Thirteen years before a company that won't be named, a broke ex-cab driver builds a car service that runs entirely on the early web. No office, no dispatcher, no meter anyone can see. It works, beautifully.

Nobody thought twice about handing their car ownership to an unregulated global dispatcher because nobody thought twice about taxi drivers. Displacing licensed cabbies had no social cost. That's not innovation. That's classist.

I often have a kind of 'song of the day' that I test on some folks. This was yesterday's, and everyone who heard it left an unexpected tip. But a traffic light turning green as the third verse began, then dropping off as the feedback subsided, felt almost as good as seeing her thankful smile.

Not the best time to destroy any positive myths about human drivers, but the 25000 streets thing has always been superhuman. When green badge (central London) cabbies learn the book of common runs, that's about 3500 streets. By the time they finish the knowledge, they'll have memorized about 7000.

Uber didn't invent 'rideshare'—and real carpools are a tiny fraction of their trips. The word peaked in 1996 because of the Clean Air Act's Employee Commute Options (ECO) law, which forced large corps to mandate carpooling. Big Tech hijacked a green vocabulary to mask a predatory taxi empire.
A line graph from the Google Books Ngram Viewer tracing the frequency of the word 'rideshare' in English literature from 1950 to 2019. The line shows near-zero usage for decades, followed by a sudden, sharp spike that peaks dramatically right around 1996. After 1996, the line drops off through the 2000s, before beginning a second, steep climb starting around 2012

The gig economy acts as an unofficial welfare system. Instead of forcing employers to pay a living wage so workers can afford the true cost of goods & services, governments allow the system to cannibalize, for the sake of monopolistic cut-rates, the working class's single largest asset: their cars.
