Happily bland trans woman. My life is mostly soup, sewing, writing, and supporting the people that I cherish (she/her)

Leaving the UK with a heavy heart
Today, as a family, we have booked our flights and our one-way ticket out of the UK. This has not felt like a choice. This feels like fleeing to protect ourselves. For the past 7 years we have look…

I'm not gonna quote post that estrangement article doing the rounds cos I ain't giving them the metrics but part of being in queer community is knowing a lot of people who are estranged from family. None of them broke contact for trivial reasons.

I maintain my strong belief that “white feminism” in Britain is a fucking massive problem that continues to be ignored because I continue to see white British women who should know better uphold these other white women as some sort of ‘feminist icons’ and ignore their outright bigotry.

My experiences with this kind of person in the 2010s killed my desire for most organising. They seemed to thrive on the fact that the people actually doing practical, real-world things to make a difference are also often very open-hearted and overly-patient to the point of vulnerability

The sound of rain used to just be relaxing. Now it keeps pulling me into the memory of (very nervously) telling an amazing woman that I love her too while drops pattered on the trees around us. Looking into her eyes. Holding her close. And just being together

For many, today is the last weekend before school restarts. Sorting uniform, finding books, preparing to be reunited with friends. For my kid, who won't be returning to school, it is a time of huge uncertainty. We don't yet have a clear path forward. English schools are no longer a viable option.

Trying to sign up for a beginner's, self-paid 8 week course at the local FE college. They want me to attend an adult learner's day and hand over all of my past qualifications to do it. Whyyyy? Just give me a date and a payment portal so I can learn more low level skills for my hobby!!

Something that’s struck me recently is how easy it is to conflate “bravely speaking the truth” with “cruelty and enjoying joining the mob”, and while for most people on here today to see through the fascist concept of “ruinous empathy,” that doesn’t stop you worshiping cruelty under another name.

Going to a uv/neon themed pride party tomorrow and my partner's reaction to my outfit is adorable. To be fair, neon pink micro crop, bra, skirt, fishnets, clear pvc underbust corset, and lots of uv reactive body paint is not something people would ever expect me to wear

This is an incredible read, but the point about numbers stays with me too. In the early 2000s, local institutions said they'd never dealt with a trans kid before. One estimated that there were 5 to 10 trans people in an area of 300,000. I cried when the last census said there were ~1000 of us here

This captures why I absolutely can't stand the current UK Supreme Court's shift into absurdly rigid textualism and a version of the mirror principle that leads to viciously narrow readings of the ECHR. For a while, there was at least some awareness that judgments don't exist in a conceptual bubble

The EU law principle of equality means that none of this shit could happen. If there was an indication that the justification used to exclude trans people from positive action would affect other rights, the courts, including the Supreme Court, would have to refer it to the ECJ.

Others have said this but this is the exact same argument around trans healthcare right now - some people (Hilary Cass) saying that you can't prove that affirmation doesn't cause trans people to continue to be trans and therefore we should try conversion therapy on kids

My main thing I've learned from being a feminist since I was a teen is that feminism isn't intuited by people who are negatively affected by sexism, it's hard worked through critical thought about the experience of sexism, and most people just refuse to learn that and default to prejudices about it.

Cynically, I think Burnham's Cabinet is going to be functionally more transphobic than Starmer's. Burnham has portrayed himself as an antidote to Starmer's 'boy's club' and, sadly, I think that will mean more bigoted members of the Women’s Parliamentary Labour Party wielding greater influence

I've said it before but I hate the way that some people speak to volunteers or campaigners like an angry customer. There's no resources or training and it's not a service. It's just people doing their best with very little and giving what they can

If you need someone to vent at, pay a therapist, or get a teddy bear. Don't send abuse to an effective org. I hope you understand that by making hard working campaigners like those at TSA deal with your bullshit, you are materially damaging your own interests – and the trans community's.

It's disgusting that an entirely volunteer trans org has been getting abusive emails for a difficult but necessary safety decision. If you have given them grief over this you should be utterly ashamed. Wasting our community's resources on soothing your tantrum – from an org actually doing the work.

I frequently speak with advocates from other countries, where there is a proper institutional support network that targeted families or young people as individuals and as collectives lean upon & are actively supported by. In the UK there is just... nothing.
