Happy weekend! Here’s a 3,500 year-old Minoan clay flask decorated with a wide-eyed octopus! 🐙❤️ From Palaikastro, Crete. Heraklion Archaeological Museum 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a frontal view of a clay flask with warm-yellow coloured slip with black hand painted decoration depicting an octopus. The octopus is swimming diagonally with eight writhing, sucker-lined arms covering the surface of the flask. It stares out at the viewer with wide, almost cartoon-like eyes. Additional black painted motifs include sea urchins, tritons, small rocks and seaweed. Minoan decoration depicting sea motifs is known by scholars as the 'Marine Style'. The flask measures 27 cm (about 10.5 inches) in height. It has a short spout at the top with a small loop handle at either side and a small base so that it can stand upright.

“Its shape is somewhat unusual, constructed by slipping together, while still leather hard (clay that is not quite dry), two shallow plates which had been made on a fast spinning potter’s wheel and with highly refined clay. The circular bases of these shallow plates are still visible in the center of both sides of the flask” (Smart History article “Octopus Vase” by Dr Senta German https://smarthistory.org/octopus-vase/)

The flask was excavated in 1903 at a Bronze Age settlement site at Palaikastro. The excavations between 1902 and 1906, were run by R. Bosanquet and R.M. Dawkins from the British School of Athens. The flask is part of the collections at Heraklion Archaeological Museum, Heraklion, Crete.

Designated community custodians or legal delegates, operating via binding co-governance boards. Infrastructure relies on bilateral agreements with binding vote authority. An actionable blueprint needs immutable logs (open ledgers), escrow custody, automated penalties, and revocation APIs.➡️

Kallichoron-Philyra @evavasi.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
By community, you mean the source communities (the descendants, indigenous groups, cultural custodians who hold living heritage), right? Revocability comes with full legal sovereignty: if a community holds ownership, they inherit the right to withhold or condition access whenever terms are breached
100
Kallichoron-Philyra @evavasi.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Access. Before a community can meaningfully describe or display an item, they must have physical and legal access to it. Once access is restored, decisions on display or non-display and description follow. Let me know what you think.

The goal should be restoring dignity to origin communities and transforming museums into true living bridges between cultures.
100
Kallichoron-Philyra @evavasi.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Alternatives include automatic transfer to a neutral third-party escrow. Also, public boycotts, loan freezes by origin nations, and boycotts by scholars and donors force the issue when legal paths stall.
000
Kallichoron-Philyra @evavasi.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
The default should be an automated public 'Overdue' status upon expiry, followed by temporary display withdrawal after 30 days without logged progress. Inaction should carry an immediate reputational and operational cost.

Naming the claimant, the responsible institution, and the next review date should all be non-negotiable. The review date feels especially critical because without a hard deadline, institutions can list a claimant and drag out 'negotiations' indefinitely without ever making a final decision.

I completely agree. Looted or stolen items belong back with their origin communities. Pairing labels with an official status like 'contested' or 'restituted' ensures that transparency leads to real action. Thanks so much for sharing your perspective.😊🍀🕊

...➡️Once a museum officially documents harm or controversial acquisition practices on a label, it opens the door to broader uncomfortable political questions or repatriation claims. This is only one of many cases globally. I think museums should strive for full transparency and open dialogue.🕊

Dear Quax World, you raise a crucial point. Embracing the full, complex trail reminds us how fragile and complicit all networks can be. Another example could be the Parthenon Marbles: the "rescue" narrative (Lord Elgin) neatly bypassed imperial extraction to eclipse arbitrary removal from Greece(1)➡️

Indeed, every stage of this story was a preservation 'accident': from the fire that baked the clay, to the illicit antiquities trade that led Hrozný to Kültepe. A 2FA Bronze Age system required a fire, illicit trade and World War I for a Czech linguistic genius to finally "unlock" it.

For #AncientSiteSunday the #Hellenistic theatre at Pergamon, #Türkiye, built in the 3rd century BC, alterations were made in the #Roman period. It's one of the steepest known ancient theatres. The capacity was about 10,000 spectators. 📷️ C. Bredfeldt 🏺
A full shot of the ruins of an ancient theatre, located on a hillside.  The theatre's steep tiered seating structure is clearly visible, constructed of light gray stone blocks, weathering evident in various tones. The hillside surrounding the theatre is covered with grass, creating a contrast between the man-made stone structures and the natural landscape. Sections of crumbling stone walls and foundations are scattered throughout the grassy slopes.

😊🙏🏻 True! Museum display cases may lack context but the micro-archaeology of the kārum houses preserves the human story. The find-spots capture that great interconnected world. C. Michel's Daily Life at Kültepe also brings the female correspondents from Aššur (Lamassī, Tarām-Kūbi, Ahaha) to light!☀️🕊

Great question! The windows probably belong to a Florentine household since the detail is from Masolino da Panicale’s fresco St. Peter Healing a Man and the Raising of Tabitha (c. 1424–1425) in the Brancacci Chapel, Florence. Wonderful page and art history teasers!😊🎨

Thank you for these great points!🙏🏻😃 I also find intriguing how scribes used unpronounced "tags" (determinatives) to flag names, such as a silent 𒁹 before a personal male name. Looking forward to exploring Anatolian personal names and loanwords further. Enjoy a wonderful day ahead!🙋‍♀️🙏🏻🌏🌎🌍🕊

Comparing cylinder seals & witness impressions to modern 2FA makes so much sense! Amazed by the cylinder seals themselves✨️🙏🏻, and that ~23,000 Kültepe tablets survived because a massive fire baked the clay into ceramic. The exhibits at the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in Ankara are exquisite!✨️✨️

Facinating! The Ballachulish brings to mind the Greek xoana (ξόανα), the primitive wooden cult idols carved long before classical marble statues. Because wood decays over time, so few survive today. Amazing how different cultures shared that same connection to wood. Thank you for such great posts!🌊☀️

🔎How was long-distance communication safeguarded in antiquity? The #Assyrians enclosed a clay dried tablet in a sealed outer layer that guaranteed the integrity of communication across trade routes. Unauthorised access would destroy the unique seal impressions. #Archaeology #Antiquity #Artefacts

Hi, friends!☀️ Τhe Kamares Cave is slighly offset from a saddle in the Psiloriti Range, aligned with #Phaistos in #Crete. Archaeologists have excavated pieces of Kamares ware (Καμαραϊκά) as far as Byblos, Ungarit, Cyprus & ancient Egypt (eg. Tell el-Daba & Kahun). #Museums #Archaeology #Art #Pottery
A 3,800-year-old krater (κρατήρας). Kamares ware (Καμαραϊκά αγγεία) from Phaistos (Φαιστός), Crete, Greece.

Fragments of floral Kamares ware have also been excavated from 13th-Dynasty palace garden contexts and tombs along the Nile Delta. The stylised flowers have been identified as lilies.
