She's wearing a bird glove, so the owl was there for the photo, although why you'd photograph yourself with a captive owl on your wedding day beats me. I'm sure the owl was not to blame for whatever happened.

Well, that's the thing... Mainly can't decide which they are. I only found a couple of youngsters so no acorns yet, but the leaves definitely have stalks. I bought five supposedly Sessile saplings from Woodland Trust a few years ago and they look like English oaks!

The good thing about tracking collars is that you can go and find them, which I have done on multiple occasions including once from an Owl nest in a hole in the top of a tree! No idea how or why our cat was up there...

I live in Cornwall, but the oaks around me (I look after a good number of nice old ones) are all Q.Robur, except for a couple that could be Q.Petraea hybrids. And one Q.Cerris that I refuse to cut down because I like it and it's been in the woods for at least 200 years. No nationalism between oaks!

Sïmon 〓〓 @euroscanner.net · 30/09/2026
Mine have 'wildlife-style' tracker collars now. If I need to, I can find them, which would have saved the one that was run over. I'd hate to not know where they were these days, although the collars are obsolete and I can't get spares, now, so I might need to change the system at some time.

Yup. I know brown people that don't like dogs, but not the other way around. We all smell like people, and the first dog+human partnerships happened when we were all brown. Wildlife does not need us to persecute it. Life's hard enough for them with us around as it is. 🙃

I know how you feel. I badly bruised the joint in my left thumb in August, and it still doesn't stay in the socket when I'm using it. I keep it strapped up when I'm doing things, because it's painful. At least I'm now only using cohesive vet tape and not a brace, so I hope it's getting better!

I did wonder why it seemed to stop helping me pedal at what seemed like quite a pedestrian speed. It's a lot better now, and I wouldn't have a bike without a motor now. Comes of living in a valley - you have to go up a steep hill to get out in any direction.

He knows you, and knows that all you need to do is turn it on. My bike came with a basic box to select 'speeds'. It wasn't until I finally got a display controller that was programmable that I noticed the motor was set up for tiny wheels like yours. The 20mph limit was 10mph on 26 inch wheels.

Ah, it's illegal to pick up your own road kill, but if you were in a following vehicle.. 🙃 Talking of lack of empathy: I once had to work with a bloke who kidnapped and dumped cats for fun, because he 'hated' them. I always hope that he died a horrible death.

Country life can be a bit lacking in empathy. I seem to be the only person who keeps pheasants who doesn't shoot them, eat them or eat their eggs. The dented waifs and strays I have would have simply been killed as 'unproductive'. However, I do have all of Jack's shows on DVD!

I'll have to photograph the ones I come across today. The most appealing one I've seen looks like a huge hazelnut. Probably instant death. And another one that might be Chicken of the Woods, or some woody bracket fungi.

I'd guess it's not an edible one, and even if it is, it's past it's best. There are quite a few large and nutty-looking brown fungi erupting from the grass and woodland floor at the moment. Some may well be edible, but I don't know enough to be sure, so to me they're all 'death stools' (Todesstuhl).

Well, the data is starting to accumulate, but I don't know yet if this is good or bad. I used to listen for pings whilst working and I am sure I heard more than one or two an hour. #MeteorRadio #UKMON
A mere four days of meteor 'ping' data collection. Not showing a pattern or a great deal of activity as yet, but early days and the whole system is a complete lashup.

But tax doesn't raise funds. Government spends money into existence and taxes it out of existence. All that people hiding money offshore and avoiding taxes does is put an additional tax burden onto the rest of us, which means we get to keep less money. So they're basically stealing from taxpayers.

Well, the Radio Meteor detector (records reflections from the ionised trains left by meteors burning up in the atmosphere) software I've installed seems to be working. A few more things to tweak, but it's getting there. #MeteorRadio
Output of a bash script that calls a python script that produces a graphical representation of the number of meteor pings detected by my receiving system in each hour of each day. The system has only been running for a few days and still needs a bit of work, and the script has almost certainly been superseded by other functions in the software that I have yet to explore or get to work, but this modified script works fine for the time being.

Piddington's independence ref is being presented as a quaint 'crumpets and muffins' comedy of plucky country folk. It's much darker and nastier than that and shows how deeply entrenched the bigoted 'fighting aged men on boats' narrative runs. Me for @noosphere.app www.noosphere.app/passport-to-...

You only have to 'start' work after permission is granted. Just dig a hole, lay a single brick, etc. That's enough to have 'started' work, legally. It makes nobbling these companies very difficult. A rejustification after 5 years, however.... 🙃

I have an enclosure just down the drive from the house with three rescue pheasants in it. And now we also have 'Sherwood'. He's a lonely wild male who'd rather like to be in the cage too, except that my Dennis isn't keen on having a rival in the cage with him. They'll fight. Male pheasants do that.
Male pheasant outside my pheasant cage. He's been arguing with the pheasant in the cage, and the female pheasants in there rather like him. I'm calling him Sherwood, because he has a green head and neck with no white ring like a hood, and Robin Hood didn't quite work as a name.
