Re-nationalisation in full swing, unpicking the supranational European Union as per the EU Treaties. While Europe urgently needs deeper integration into a federal Union, national leaders are doing the exact opposite. (Remember who else wanted this? A certain Donald T...)

The Black Sea is actually not a bad place for Russia to test NATO, because due to the Montreux Convention it is difficult for NATO to send a naval force to the area.

I agree there has always been a degree of inequality with each EEC/EU enlargement, but the contexts in which they happen should not be underestimated. Ukraine's goal of EU accession in 2004 has gained a much greater political & security dimension since 2022. verfassungsblog.de/wider-always...

The article is correct, we should not treat new members as potential troublemakers while leaving current members relatively untouched - especially when current members are experiencing a growth in authoritarian & illiberal forces within their political space.

Finally read the new AfD strategy paper on Europe. It casts 2029 as a “historic window” to reorient the EU’s foundations through Treaty change, with a right-wing majority in the EP and a German government with AfD participation both within reach. Thread on some notable points:

This is something I keep mentioning: the current era with Left parties and personalities collapsing towards conservative populism or even fascism is just the new version of the 90s, when they were all collapsing to neoliberalism. "Clever" operators and the weak willed both go with the flow

If I remember my school history textbook correctly, when Portugal introduced its new currency in 1911 after the overthrow of the monarchy, the exchange rate was 1 GBP = 25 escudos. After WW1 and Portugal's heavy indebtedness to pay for the expenses, the rate was almost 1 GBP = 130 escudos

An example: I bought my first two games for Nintendo DS - New Super Mario Bros. and Age of Empires - from a Canadian store. Mostly because their retail price in the eurozone was €90 but thanks to a very favourable exchange rate, they cost me less than €60, even with shipping expenses.

Yes, but only much later, in the late 2000s. Except for a handful of then-recent games, most of my import games were older, retro games. While import gaming was visible, I doubt it was statistically very significant to weigh heavily on sales.

Before social media & permanent online became the norm, conservatives in Western countries lambasted young people as pop culture zombies who only cared about consuming and ignored literature, history & science. 30 years later, those zombies are in power, but conservatives are mostly fine with that.
