**Finding Your Teacher Voice #3: The Five Voices** Different classroom situations need different tones of voice. Our trainees learn how to move between five different voices, giving them a practical toolkit they can use every day in the classroom. #TeacherTraining #edusky

**Finding Your Teacher Voice #9: The first syllable** Getting a class’s attention doesn’t have to mean shouting. The way you use tone, pace and presence can make a difference from the very first syllable. That’s something our trainees have the opportunity to practise as part of their training.

**Finding Your Teacher Voice #8: Louder isn’t always better** Teaching can put a lot of demands on your voice, particularly if your response to a noisy classroom is simply to get louder. Learning how to project and use your voice effectively can help protect it as well as improve communication.

**Finding Your Teacher Voice #5: A calmer classroom** The way we speak can affect the way others respond. A calmer, more controlled voice can help create a calmer classroom too. Voice is about much more than volume. #FindingYourTeacherVoice #BehaviourManagement

**Finding Your Teacher Voice #4: Professional voice users** Teachers are professional voice users. Your voice needs to last through lessons, explanations, questions, stories and conversations, day after day. That’s why learning how to look after and use it effectively matters. #TeacherTraining

Name → Describe → Act is a simple thinking routine that can have a surprisingly big impact in primary science. Take an object, image, specimen, model or scientific event and ask pupils to work through three stages of thinking Find more at: lnkd.in/ePQGXd_D #edusky
Name → Describe → Act is a simple thinking routine that can have a surprisingly big impact in primary science.

Take an object, image, specimen, model or scientific event and ask pupils to work through three stages of thinking:

Name – What parts or features can you identify?
Describe – What does each part look like?
Act – What does each part do? What is its function? How does it contribute to the whole?

It sounds simple, but there is a lot of useful science thinking going on here. In primary science, children can sometimes recognise something without really looking at it closely. They see a flower and say “flower”. They see a circuit and say “wires”. They see a skeleton and say “bones”.

This routine encourages them to go further. They begin to notice individual features, use more precise scientific vocabulary and think about the relationship between structure and function.

For example, with a flower:
- Name: petal, stem, stamen, stigma
- Describe: colourful, thin, powdery, sticky
- Act: attracts insects, supports the flower, produces pollen, catches pollen

Suddenly, looking at an object becomes an opportunity to develop observation, vocabulary, recall and scientific reasoning.

It could work particularly well with:
- photographs and microscope images
- plants and living things
- skeletons and body systems
- mechanisms and machines
- electrical circuits
- rocks and materials
- photographs of scientific phenomena

It is also a useful reminder that practical science does not always need complicated equipment.

Sometimes the most valuable thing we can give pupils is time to look closely, talk carefully and explain what they notice.

Name → Describe → Act is a thinking routine developed by Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Find more at: https://lnkd.in/ePQGXd_D
