I quite like how the FF Resonance demo plays (though I hope the dungeons get more complex and resources scarcer as it goes) but I'm a little mixed on the presentation and I'm not feeling particularly positive about the story or characters at all.

Whenever I write about old software, it still strikes me how absurd it is that it’s easier to run software from the 90s and 2000s on a modern computer than it is to run an iOS app from 15 years ago.

My favourite game on the Amiga and possibly my favourite story in video games (though Rob Swigart still doesn't really think it is one!) I really want to check out the student-produced VR remake that came out a few years back but, alas, no VR 😔

Been really enjoying The Disappearers by Marlon James. No idea how accurate it is to the experiences of gay men in 80s and 90s Jamaica but it kinda spiritually, emotionally feels like where I'm at rn. (i'm doing fine i swear)

It's s shame the Amiga version is immediately, noticeably worse than the Mega Drive version because it has actual saves and it's a god send. Ah well. We got cameras and save states now.

In 1980, Intel introduced the 8087 floating-point coprocessor chip. Plugging this chip into your IBM PC made math 100 times faster, good for CAD and spreadsheets. I opened up the chip to reverse-engineer exactly how it does complicated calculations. Let's take a look inside...
The integrated circuit is a black ceramic rectangle with 40 metal pins sticking out, in two rows. (This is known as a DIP, a Dual Inline Package.) It has three rows of text: "D8087-1", a cryptic version label, and then the copyright line with a big lower-case I, INTEL m c 1980 1984. The m and c are in circles for the mask-work symbol and the copyright symbol. The chip has a small semicircular notch on the left side, indicating its orientation. The package consists of two thin ceramic layers, bonded together with a gray substance; the metal pins stick out from this gray substance. The ceramic package is important to me because tapping the gray layer with a chisel will cause the two layers to separate, revealing the silicon die inside. In contrast, most chips are in epoxy packages, which are very difficult to open, usually requiring strong acids.

Are there any newer 3D platformers going for the more slow-paced and meticulous style of PS1 Tomb Raider and stuff? Most everything I can find plays like Mario or Sonic. If it's "cinematic" then you get more grounded movement but the platforming is all context sensitive, zero precisio required.

Despite everything, I'll miss this place when I'm gone.
Photography.

An overcast sky, yellowing in the sunset. There is the silhouette of a house the left, old satellite dish protruding. On the right, more distantly, is a tower block, lights on from top to bottom. Across the bottom of the image are fences and foliage. Between where I'm standing and the tower block is a vast garden just out of sight.

Case came dirty but I'm excited to dig into this. The games list has a few bangers! PD/freeware/shareware compilations have a bit of a sketchy reputation but tbh they may be a better representation of what computer gaming was like for most of us in the 90s and 00s than your Half-Lifes and shit.
