I have a new piece up on Slate, on how the "tough on crime" Louisiana GOP is cutting prosecutor jobs and judges in New Orleans, and even eliminating one position solely so the person who won it (an exoneree) can't take his seat. Another case of "tough on crime" really being abt social control.

Philadelphia reported 39 murders through April which is the fewest reported there since 1963. New York City reported 75 murders through April 26 which is on track to be the fewest murders through April ever reported (previous low was 86 in 2018).

Mardi Gras gun arrests began to be scrutinized heavily in 2023, when the New Orleans DA's office dismissed a case against then-LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers, now a star receiver for the New York Giants.
