Opposing military aid to Ukraine is not a ‘non-violent’ position, it is an explicit selection between the two available positions, both violent. You can’t say ‘we oppose Russia’, without then explaining, with what?

Excellent demolition of “affordable housing”. It’s a muddled no man’s land between market and social housing, achieving the goals of neither. It functions as a modest benefit to a tiny fraction of middle class families. It’s costly, inefficient and impedes geographic and occupational mobility.

This is true to an extent, but what matters is the opportunity cost. One of the core points we make in the piece is that the opportunity cost of 'affordable housing' is huge. You're much better off focusing on unblocking planning restrictions and funding more social housing.

The example is more about the affordable housing structure. The Victorian AH model only works because our market rents are much lower than Sydney and Brisbane. If we had similar rental costs, then the entire AH structure would collapse!

Against ‘Affordable’ Housing | Inflection Points
It’s not the same as social housing, and it doesn’t help those most in need. Australia is spending big on ‘affordable’ housing—but we shouldn’t.

Two months ago, I wrote a paper for the Electoral Matters Committee. It clocked in at 23,000 words with 16 data tables, 11 graphs, 204 footnotes and 30,000 datapoints. I made the case that we should take advantage of this historic juncture to expand participation in our representative democracy.
GREEN SHOOTS FOR THE GRASSROOTS
MAINTAINING TRUST IN OUR DEMOCRACY BY
RESTORING PARTICIPATION IN DEMOCRATIC INSTITUTIONS
This paper proposes interconnected reforms that aim to rebuild trust in Australia’s democratic institutions — our Parliament, our political parties and the ecosystem of creative conflict they drive. These institutions are a great strength in our system and shouldn’t be circumvented, dismissed or ignored by policymakers.
For decades, Australia was the world’s laboratory for democratic reforms. We led the way on the secret ballot, women’s suffrage (for some at least), a living wage for MPs, compulsory and preferential voting and more. But since the turn of the millennium, we’ve stalled out.
For too many people, our democracy isn’t working — not the way it should and not the way we say it does. While better than many other countries, our system still leaves people feeling like their voice isn’t being heard or their vote doesn’t count. This term, we can fix that.

It’s not just NIMBY attitudes either. This flows into how council decision making happens — whether as a result of the “paradox of empowerment” or as systemically as a result of how governance systems are designed. Renters are excluded from consultations, strategies or even the very act of voting.

No, Australia does not need new cities. My new essay sets the record straight: we have a lot of cities, but we aren’t using them as well as we could be. To make our cities more successful, we have to open up a lot more land for commercial uses to enable agglomeration.

To be more clear, you also literally cannot rent "affordable housing" if you're too poor in many cases due to "renter stress thresholds"

Affordable housing, IMO, is bad because it comes at the opportunity cost of funding social housing. It's a zero-sum trade off that means we can house less people at risk of homelessness

Are subsidised homes for the middle class better than social housing for those at risk of homelessness? Planning academics and Yarra’s mayor seem to think so. We support the DFP’s 3% levy for Victoria’s Social Housing Growth Fund, which means more social housing for more people.

Putting aside the damage any kind of demand-juicing policy like this has on the broader market, at a pure design level, programmes that limit the number of participants either have to rely on strong eligibility criteria (in which case, just means test) or are entirely arbitrary.
