As for removing or moving cameras once they’ve been made less necessary by physical safety improvements, I’m all for it. But SDOT has shown little appetite for revisiting the existing locations. For all intents and purposes, speed cameras are permanent once they’re installed in most U.S. cities.

Thankfully the spatial distribution of cameras is more even now, after the citywide rebalancing that we pushed for. SDOT basically added more cameras to wealthier, whiter areas of the city.

… so the non-local offenders were probably folks driving in from White Center, Burien, Tukwila, Renton, etc., many of whom live there because they’ve been priced out of Seattle. I imagine the demographic/economic inequities from ticketing those drivers are worse.

Ethan C. Campbell @ethan2sea.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
SDOT’s analysis found that about half of tickets go to non-Seattle residents, so it might be a similar situation to Baltimore. But I’m not sure that lessens the equity implications. Cameras were heavily concentrated in the southern half of Seattle at the time of that city analysis…

Granted, I have a rider on my renters policy that specifically covers my e-bike, but I think renters (or homeowners) insurance is generally a viable route when the driver is unknown, uninsured, or did a hit-and-run. Sorry that you’re dealing with this!

Anna, really sorry. When I got hit, I was directed by 911 (who similarly did not send police) to file a collision report with WSP. I included it when filing a claim with my renters insurance, which reimbursed the cost of repairs + replacing the wheel the driver ran over. wsp.wa.gov/driver/colli...

Admirable clarity @science.org
The Trump administration hates academic science funding, full stop. They hate where that money goes, and they hate who it goes to. They want to keep all that money for themselves, to hand out to favored cronies who can help them get elected and to steer yet more money and more power back into their hands.

That’s it. That’s the story

On the other hand, BP money probably funded at least a portion of the summer internship in oceanography that convinced me to go into science, so there’s that.

This is an enlightening read on how industry funding can shape the direction of science, both subtly and less so. The “Carbon Wedges” paper certainly influenced how I viewed climate mitigation strategies as a college student. Its ripple effects in the policy arena are unquantifiable but profound.

Curious about the Quick Haul too. Note it has 2.15” tires, so it is (barely) over the limit. Maybe a useful data point: Cascades accepted my Vektron last weekend (same wheels, ~42 lbs w/o battery), but the handlers had trouble lifting it onto the hook so they laid it flat on the baggage car floor.

We went with the Quick Haul D8 after a test ride, FWIW. The NBD felt a bit sluggish and clumsy. The QH felt more natural to ride for some reason. Its longer rear rack is also badass and opens up some neat hauling options.

Jorge wrote the (text)book on ocean biogeochemistry. But even more importantly, he was a mentor to so many. I changed my major and career plans after a summer spent in his group, around his gentle curiosity. He taught me that science is inseparable from the people who do it. I’ll miss him greatly.

I'm impressed by the bike infrastructure in Seattle (I cycled 18 miles of it). Thanks to @sneakypeteiii.bsky.social for lending me a bike and guiding us, and @mtyka.bsky.social and @ethan2sea.bsky.social for coming along.
A group of four cyclists is on an empty, paved area. The foreground features a person wearing a yellow and gray helmet, with a slight smile. In the background, three cyclists are riding. One rider is wearing a red shirt and is giving a peace sign.A two way bike lane, with cyclists riding. There are parked cars on the right, and pedestrians on the sidewalk. The backdrop features urban buildings and traffic signals under a cloudy sky. Bike lane markings and directional arrows are visible.
