'Blue Heron' by Elizabeth Thoms Charles
Seeking, searching the blue heron gazes out over the water. Illusive fish have swum out of the shallows onto deeper holes in the river. A glint of sunlight, a shadow flickers in the grasses just beyond the shore. Blue heron snatches the slithering garter snake. The snake twists and arches. Without releasing his prized dinner, heron flies to a rock in the middle of the stream, shakes his bill, crushing the snake’s spine and swallows the swallows the gray reptile. Blue heron flaps high into a cottonwood, perches on the edge of the nest and regurgitates pulverized reptile into the waiting mouths of his young while his mate soars in search of her meal. Returning to the stillness a solitary sentinel, the blue heron stares out at the river satisfied. Great Blue Herons create a bridge between the wilds and suburbia.

The Many Misfortunes of Eugenia Wang by Stan Yan (Atheneum)
Twelve-year-old Eugenia secretly plans to host her birthday party on her birthdate, April 4, despite her mother’s disapproval: it’s the unluckiest day of the year according to Chinese superstition. Then Eugenia starts having strange, scary dreams about her party that manifest as drawings she doesn’t remember adding to the comic she’s creating. As her birthday approaches, she must figure out how to prevent the impending catastrophes from occurring. Suspense, comedy-horror, and well-developed character growth come together in Yan’s debut graphic novel. 264 pp.

Mixed-media collage on torn paper showing painted textures in green, blue, pink, and gray, with cut-out heart shapes and pieces of printed sheet music. On the right is a black ink drawing of a child in a coat and scarf holding a lined notebook, with curly hair blowing. A Preppy fountain pen lies below on the artwork on a wooden table.

High Hopes

Sara’s a striker
Megyn’s midfield
Diti’s a dream on defense
Gloria’s great
When she’s guarding the goal
(Some say she’s got a sixth sense)

Heather hits headers
Priya can pass
Our lineup is deep as a trench
Me, I just hope
I’ll get into the game
Right now I’m warming the bench

Taking another trip on the Dirigible Balloon with the (decidedly not sky-bound) Green Submarine! dirigibleballoon.org/writer/ianbr... @northernjim.bsky.social #WritingCommunity #WritingForChildren #PoetryForKids #PoetryForChildren #PoetryCommunity #KidLit #KidLitUK
Screenshot of the poem The Green Submarine by Ian Brownlie, from the Dirigible Balloon website. Poem text:

The Green Submarine

Captain Kim dived down deep into the ocean,
In her green submarine called ‘The Gherkin in Motion’.
Weaving past whales with the help of Mate Stu,
Who steered the sub like a foot guides a shoe.

The Gherkin sped on ‘til it reached the sea bed.
From a map in her lap, Captain Kim calmly read:
“At the Great Anchor, turn sharply north-west.”
Mate Stu said “Aye aye!” and pressed on with their quest.

Past anglerfish, tuna and even a shark,
They gunned for a tunnel disguised by the dark.
The sub reappeared in a shower of light,
As before them appeared a fabled delight.

The green submarine was a craft full of glee:
A glittering city submerged by the sea!
Their eyes bulged out wide like a great Praying Mantis.
Captain Kim and Mate Stu had discovered Atlantis!
